Hi,

I have a photo, which Full Throttle magazine has asked to use with an article about hillclimbs, what should I charge them for using it?

It's my first photo to be published and I have no idea about fee's.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It depends what size they are going to print it, the NUJ rates for a magazine of that size is approx
1/2 page £120
1/4 page £85
1/8 page £75

That is if they pay you at all as I have heard a few things about that mag

Motorsport mags don't pay anywhere near the NUJ rates, ballpark figure would be around £20-25 for 1/4 page (a bit more for Autosport) and your chances of getting that amount from Full Throttle are, how shall I put it... remote. Always ask BEFORE what the rates are, by now they've probably assumed that you'll do it "for the glory" and won't want any money.

Do you have the ability to sell the photo?

Were you signed on media for the event?

This is what one of the camera magazines pay;
£120 per A3 spread / £60 per full A4 page / £30 per half page.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I may just give them it for free.

I'm just a punter mate, who happened to have a camera at the right place at the right time. It's just a pitty the "media" were not there to capture it.

Are you saying that the mag cannot use the photo?

Most magazines have a set rate for publishing words and pictures. Motoring mags don't pay great fees. I'd ask for £40 then settle for less if they choke at that price. From a moral point of view, I think you should get paid.

You can probably expect to chase them incessantly before you get your cheque too.

For god sake dont do it for free!! If a anyone asked them for a free magazine would they give it to you, NO! They are in business, and by 'giving' away free photos you are reducing the rates that are paid to pro-togs. Its not like they dont earn any money from there advertisers and readers.

It's likely that you have no right to sell or use it for commercial use. Standard terms & conditions for events preclude you as a punter from using pictures other than for your own private use. It probably says that on the back of your ticket.

You'll probably get away with it, it depends on the venue - there are some venues that are very hot on this type of thing, many more are less bothered.

I doubt they'll pay you a decent rate for it unless it's the photo of the decade. If it is the photo of the decade I'd take good advice before giving it away for free or for not much more than free.

Thanks for the info Piglet.

There was no ticket as this was a free event.
The only sign I saw was "Warning, Motorsport can be dangerous" eek
And here's the photo, not exactly "Photo of the decade" but an unusual site at hillclimbs none the less.

Of course I won't forget tax.

Usually magazines have their own rates so they tell you what they are going to pay.
As above do not give it away for free

mags have their own rates. F&M ay me £30 per page, my cover from sigital SLR user was £100 and my 2 page spread in same mag was £100. other modified car mags pay per feature which works out about £50-60 per page. depends on the circulation really.

If we're being pedantic, one should declare one's income and one's expenses to the tax man

I'm self employed anyway mate (just not a photographer), so will just put this through the books as usual.
