Having had my 996 C2 for nigh on 11 months, covering circa 9,000 miles, and of course having assumed "complete" mastery of it, got a timely reminder that they still have quite a sting in the tail. Joining the A14 eastbound at the roundabout/junction under the M6/M1 yesterday, in the wet, managed a 180 degree spin. Dodgy roundabout at the best of times, sort of sharp turn and then up an incline. Gave it just a little too much throttle and lost back end completely, into slide then ended up spinning heading west instead of east, narrowly missing central reservation, mini waiting to come out of junction etc. before got it back under control. Quite scary, I was bloody lucky. No idea if TC kicked in it all happened so fast! Had to (embarrassingly) take detour back round the roundabout before joining the same exit again, this time with a little less juice.
Wifes commemt was "bloody hell John, you were going too fast, you should have been in a lower gear"(?), to which I responded "don't be silly, I was only in 2nd, must have been a bit of diesel on the road or something" rolleyes
So just a precautionary word really. When cornering in the wet I'll certainly be a bit more careful in future.

Well that's good that nothing bad came of it and you have learnt from it. I know a roundabout like that. Once it snags you you will forever drive that particular bitlike a granny but then miraculously find your right foot planted again on exit wink

No idea it all happened so quickly. Believe me when it does you don't have time to think about it, instinct just kicks in and it was quite possibly more luck than skill that I managed to get it back under smile

Sounds like good fun. You should practice a bit, however, as you did not complete the full roundabout sliding...wink

Snap oversteer on acceleration like that can be caused by low front end grip (typically 911 power understeer) followed by suddenly regaining front end grip. Most likely caused by oil or a bump in the road.

Possible. My dramatic sideways GT2 moment last night was caused by a catestrophic failure of talent. smile

Yeah, you're right. I reckon I need a car with a similar engine but four wheel drive and some traction control. Sat nav would be a bonus. Any ideas?

It depends whether you want to actually go quick or have fun thinking you are..smile

Ouch! I like the fun I'm having in the GT2 I think more than the Turbo, but actually we've hijacked the thread. Sorry OP...

So just a precautionary word really. When cornering in the wet I'll certainly be a bit more careful in future.
This was exactly my phobia of buying a c2, but would a c4 have faired differetly in this situ?

nope, my c4 did exactly the same thing to me once, in fact twice now that i think about it.

i think its a good thing (as long as you arent killed to death), we all need bringing down a peg or two.

The only times I have ever lost it in the wet was due to too much throttle on the exit of a bend whilst unwinding lock (ie wheels not pointing straight ahead).

I usually avoid more than 4000rpm in such situations now, road or track.

Yeah, but in fairness the geometry was out by a weasel on your C4 hehe
