M6 speed camera?
Discussion
Hello everybody, this is my first post, although I have been reading this forum for sometime now.
I am after some advice about an incident on Friday night on the M6 in Cumbria. At about 8.15pm, I pulled out of Burton West services heading north on the M6 (between J35 and J36). As I was "getting established" back in the fast lane, I was too busy looking in my wing mirrors and failed to notice that lined up on the first bridge over the mway were three devices mounted on tripods, one above each lane. I hit the brakes but suspect I was too late, probably going about 90 to 95ish, having just changed from second into third.
Are these speed cameras? It is not listed on the Cumbria Safety Partnership as an active site, and I saw no camera van. Would the camera vans be out and about at 8.15pm on a Friday night? I definitely saw no van. But I doubt they'd leave the equipment up all night. What I did see shortly afterwards were three unmarked traffic cars, but they were all busy with other offenders.
I know, I know, I shouldn't have been going so fast and there is nothing I can do about it now...
Thanks for your advice.

Hi mate, was it like these? http://www.thenewspaper.com/rlc/pix/anprbridge.jpg
If so you're in the clear 100%. These are called ANPR, these things basically hunt for people that have no road tax, insurance so on and so worth. So by the sounds of things you're in the clear, this explains the unmarked cars up ahead ( to stop ppl that trigger the machines ). Hope this helps?

Hi mate,
I know the cameras you mean, I drive on that stretch of motorway every day at the moment and have seen them quite a few times, either on that bridge or between 37 and 38.
They're definitely ANPR cameras, there is a van parked just off the bridge if you look close enough, and there are always marked and unmarked cars dealing with 'customers' for about 10 miles after the cameras. Causes lots of panic braking at busy times, it would probably be safer if the van was actually parked on the bridge and visible, rather than people seeing the camera tripods at the last minute.

SirSimon, those were the boys! I hope you're all correct, the last thing I need is another 3points (I'm on 8). I figured the police cars I saw further up the road would be "linked" to the cameras but I didn't know whether they were speed or tax/insurance related. In County Durham, where I drive more often, the ANPR cameras are different and are usually used in conjunction with about 4 marked police motorbikes.
Thank you everyone for your replies, I feel a lot better (although only when 14days are up will I rest easy).
