Clever ways to chill beer?

Due to a change of plans (instead of driving a Transit down, my mate is now buying an Elise ) we can no longer take a fridge as planned.

The cool-box/ice-blocks method resulted in insubstantial amounts of lukewarm beer last year. I've considered trying to fit a bag of Ammonium Nitrate in the back of my Elise... maybe we'll call that plan B


Are there any tried and tested Le Mans methods for reliable beer cooling?

I was thinking of raiding Carrefour and getting a bin, then wrapping the inside and outside in foil, filling it with water or ice or whatever and keeping it under a gazebo. But i'm not sure how effective that would be.

We used a waterproof backpack last year, filled it with ice and water and it was pretty good. You do have to brave burnout alley though for those mid-afternoon ice raids on Super-U...

Last year we dug a hole and put an inflateable beer barrel in then filled in around it. Filled with water and put a gazebo over it. The beer wasn't ice cold but certainly remained chilled all weekend, and that was without ice. Going to do the same this year and try and get some ice from the supermarket. It is important to keep some sort of cover over it (cardboard) to keep direct sum of it and also keep the dust out. Just be careful not to fall into the hole when it is dark and you are drunk!

decent insulated ice box and bags of ice did us pefectly last year. The fridge was useless. It's too hot

Use a CO2 (not foam) fire extinguisher, direct at the base of the (canned) case of beer. A 20 second burst should cool it down to about 8C. It should be can as glass bottles may crack. An old fireman taught me this one .. invaluable

Camping Gaz bottle + stove (all can be procured from carrefour)

Put beer + gas bottle + water in large bin type recepticle.

Connect gas bottle to stove and light. The gas bottle should start chilling the beer and you have a handy "always on" cigarette lighter.

Hit on this idea on the Friday last year. Bin and bags/blocks of ice kept the beer cold for most of the race. We didn't bother with the Tin Foil though, but did keep it in a gazebo with sides (so always in the shade).

Always got away with a paddling pool, in the shade, under the car. Not great but it works.

Have got a big inflatable beer cooler, as the water evaporates it cools slightly so it works a bit. There's usually a local driving around in a van flogging great lumps of ice for extortionate prices which you can use as well.

If you've got time, go and rip a gas fridge out of an old caravan, the local dealer will have a few scrappers on his cabbage patch. Then all you need to do is just connect it up to a camping gas bottle with a rubber hose. Gas firdges chill down really, really cold. And you won't need any leccy either. They are quite small and compact, ideal for beers.
