Hi. I want to de-lock my car so have purchased a spare bezel to do it. It came ready primed and is only 4cm x 2cm in size. I was going to use the manufacturers spray paint to do it? My question is-how many coats of colour should i apply and how many coats of clear coat on top? Does the number of coats affect the shade of colour? The match from the can is 100% as i have used it to touch up some small chips and you couldn't even see it afterwards!! Thanks for any advice.

hi there, i have just done this for a friend.. (golf mk4)

firstly i wiped it over with panel wipe, as there could be grease etc on it which would react to the paint. Then i primered it again myself and sanded it using 1500 grit so its smooth. AS for paint i put two layers on then 2 layers of clear coat. left to hardner then flatted it with 2500 grit and polished it very carefully.

hope that helps

Above is good advice, but don't forget to key up the surface before priming, otherwise the primer adhesion may be poor, causing the whole paintjob to fail.

I'm going to leave it to cook in the sun for a couple of weeks then take the masking off(chrome strip). Will post finished pics...........

Don't leave masking tape on for long - it makes it a right bastard to get off and leaves most of the adhesive behind. Best just leave it overnight.

Another tip is to always pull it off against itself. In other words, carefully lift a bit, bend it back so that it's touching the main run of tape and then slowly pull it back keeping it flat along the panel. Gives a clean break and stops you lifting the edge if the paint's still soft.
