It's official: 993 prices shooting past 996 prices
Discussion
Looking at 911virgin it seems that £26K now buys you a 13-year old 73,000 mile 993 or an 8-year old 56,000 mile 996.
Where's it going to end?

Still find it odd that the 964 isn't having the same sort of renaissance as the 993. Ok I acknowledge that the 993 is a much more polished version but the differences aren't that massive and there are even less sorted 964's on the market. 993’s are pretty much twice the price of 964’s now.

OK, the interior is dated, but the external looks of the 993 and the way it drives is very modern, hence it has wide appeal. It is also seen as the definitive air-cooled Porsche.

993 cars will command high prices until such time as Porsche decide to develop another air-cooled engine. Since this is likely to be just ever so slightly after hell freezes over I think owners can look forward to high residual values for many years to come.
As the stock decreases as elderly cars become economically unmaintainable or are simply irretrieveably crashed the values of "good ones" will increase.
Its market forces.
The 996 on the other hand has no particular cachet it was simply the next model. In due course it was replaced with an astonishingly similar model that features evolutionary enhancements - just as Porsche have always done. Thus rendering the car slightly outdated but by no means undesirable.
In no way does this detract from the 996 range being brilliant cars...and personally I'd rather have one than a 993 but there you go. There are a LOT of 996s and with no particular cachet I suspect their values will behave more like that of modern Jag.
IMO its market forces.

I nearly fell over last night when I saw the prices being asked for the 993 RSs at Thomas Schmitz's place in Germany. By their reckoning I have made a 20 grand profit on my car in 2.5 years.
Yes - but would you sell?According to my local estate agent website I've made a £700k profit on my house in 9 years. But I need to live in it. So I haven't made anything at all really.
There are just as many 993s in low 20s that are very good cars and quite a few 993 in high 20s and low 30s that have been for sale for a loooooooonng time.
Think you are more likely to get enthusiasts with 993s holding onto the cars trying to get the best price and no rush to really sell and older 996 owners who just want a sale.
Anybody who thinks a 993 is worth twice
the price of a 964 is sadly mistaken....and you have to compare apples with apples.
Personally I believe 993s will hold their prices circa 25k and in time 996 facelifts will hold around 10% higher...dependant on condition obviously.
The 964 at the moment is a complete bargain.

Agreed. I've seen a few 993's in low and even sub £20k's that appear pretty nice cars from the ads - average mileage, decent colours etc.Think you are more likely to get enthusiasts with 993s holding onto the cars trying to get the best price and no rush to really sell and older 996 owners who just want a sale.

I think you hit the nail on the head there! You really need to want a 993 for what it is, so you would be prepared to pay a premium in a limited market. If you have a wider choice of vehicle, you can shop around and pick up a bargain 996 due to the sheer volume of available examples.
