The Ruf is in the OPC for a new set of radiators (!!) and they lent me a Boxster S which I have to admit, is rather good fun. With a decent power and brake upgrade plus a few other minor adjustments, linked to just 1150Kg I could see one as being a decent track day toy.

Does anyone perform such magic on Boxster / Cayman? I know Ruf do (but at great expense) and / or has anyone seen such a beast in action?

There are a number of guys in the US who race boxsters, they have a forum here: http://boxcar-racing.com/forum/ - if anyone has answers, they have.

1150KG are you sure? Seems a bit light if you ask me.

Probably not what the OP was really getting at, but check out 911&PorscheWorld from several issues back. They featured a guy who rallies a heavily modded Boxster based up in Gods own Yorkshire. Very impressive too IMO.

I can dig out the mag this evening if required.

This guy has done one of the more comprehensive "home" improvements I've seen on a Cayman. Used a 2.7 base Cayman and then did the works. Probably a bit of a "sleeper" compared to othe "tuner" modified cars.
With a great US exchange rate, an 3.8 X51 crated engine looks pretty cheep!!

If you look at other threads he has posted you you can see where he is up to now.

This would make a truly superb car if my recent experiences in the two Boxsters I drove are anything to go by.

I like the way these chaps are thinking! And they're almost there - just to need to use a GT3 engine rather than the 3.8 X51.

Given there's over £30k difference between a standard Cayman and the Carrera S - and the conversion is just US$22k this has to be hugely tempting. Wonder if Porsche will take notice ...

It is. The Boxster (S) weighs 1380kg (1430kg). The Cayman S 1425kg.

Aside: Both are desperately in need of a diet, like pretty much every performance car on the planet these days, except for the British ones. Why is that? Are the British the only ones who understand less is more?

TTP in Germany will drop a new 997S engine into the Boxster. Either standard, 380 or 420bhp (the last also being a 4.1 conv.). Prices range from Euros 18,000 to 24,000. All with one year warranty. I'm popping over to talk to them fairly soon - should be interesting!

Interesting the weight gains with the xx7 series. The 986 was only 1280kg and the 987 gained 100kg over this. Why?

I think its more that Lotus etc. understand that less is less! When you see what you are getting its still bloody heavy for what they are!

Still I think sentiment has changed and people will be looking for more efficiency in cars now. With luck the inexorable rise in weight will turn around.

I believe Ninemeister can drop a supercharger in them for quite a bit less than an engine swap.

There are two big caymans running 3.9l RSR engines in the VLN and there is one more standard looking affair. The Big ones, are having huge amounts of money thrown at them, and are not yet producing the goods. According to Alzen the Mid engine layout is not good on the N'ring. Perhaps it is too early in development to be making any real comments on them.

The boxter is a fantastic car for the road, but the chassis is too soft for the track. Even when you add competition bilstien and 911 engine!
