video to computer
Discussion
how do i go about doing this?
at the mo i transfer from video camera to HD recorder, burn that onto DVD with very basic cuts, then transfer off that DVD onto the computer to make a proper home movie with titles etc
there is surely a very simple way of recording directly onto the computer?

I used an Archos (think it was the AV800) to copy the video from an analogue camcorder (or the svhs/composite video outputs on a DV) then plugged the unit into a PC - it sees it straight away as a hard disk, copy the AVI file and you're in business!
I thought the quality was pretty good too, but file is quite big.

Have a look on the camera for a firewire output socket like this:

If you have a windows pc, buy a pci firewire card (ebay £10) and a firewire cable (ebay £3)
If you have a windows laptop, buy a pcmcia firewire card (ebay £12) and a cable.
Install that, start your video editing software and look for options to Import or Capture and you're away

i suppose i should have a look at what slots i have free in the pooter before buying summat tho
Chaps,
I have this relatively all bells and whistles Viao, top of the line except without the Blue Ray technology.
Tell me, is there a good chance this kit already has the 'stuff' (sorry, not exactly a power user here
) pre-installed and therefore no need for the PCMCIA firewire card?
It's running the XP Media centre thingy OS (TV tuner and all those gubbins) as opposed to the more business oriented straight XP OS.

Cheers,
V.

Thanks for that Gregorio.
I should've thought of that one, man do I feel stoopid now
If it's got the socket then it's got everything it needs
Jeez, I even printed the pics that were kindly posted too!!!
Oh well! Dickhead will check it properly tonight!
The camcorder definitely did not come with the firewire cable unfortunately, at least I remembered that anyway.
Cheers again,
V.
