Placement of speed humps/islands
Discussion
Just thought I would post an observation I made today about the speed humps in my area. I have the pleasure of driving over these humps on most days and it dawned on me that they seem to of placed them wrongly. The humps are the square type, which do not go all the way across the road. They are the island type, which some drivers like to drive into the middle of the road to avoid. Now it occured to me that to drive over the humps correctly, I was being forced to veer closer to the central line, than normal. It was like the council workers placing the two islands, measured the road width, minus the 2 widths of the humps and then divided the remaining width into three, to get the gaps or spaces between the islands. Hence why I seemed to steer towards the center of the road, to 'clear' the humps cleanly ? Surely, if they had got their sums right, it would of been gap = ((width of road/2)-(width of hump))/2 ? Hence placeing the island in the squarely in the middle of each lane.
To me it seems slightly dangerous ? Next time you come across some island humps, have look and let me know...because I am wondering if I am just imagining it all ?

Yes, there are some square humps in a town near me in one road.
Most people, including me, avoid these obstructions by driving in the middle of the road.
Some cars, however, are wide enough to straddle the humps so no problem - no dangerous unsettling of the car or damage to suspension.
I just don't see the point of them, they've been added to a recently resurfaced road.
Why spoil a smooth road by adding bumps? Is that logical? Every other road in our area is crumbling away because of lack of maintenence.

Is it only me that seems to have noticed that the faster you drive over the fcukcing things, the less of a jolt you get from them? This only works, of course, only as a solo driver - don't try it with a passenger in the car - at least the driver has got the steering wheel to hold on to!!
