Heard on the radio this morning, the shower have/are? going to give local authorities the power to impose a 20mph limit wherever they deem suitable, with some LA`s contemplating a blanket 20mph limit in their areas. Another scare story? or is there some truth in it?
if its true, how can/will they enforce it? what will it do for emissions with everyone crawling along in 1st/2nd gear?
Another fantastic idea from the shower of Sh*t!

I don't mind the limit aspect, because if they get it wrong, people will just ignore it.

The trouble is that they will get it wrong, and the effort to put up signs, implement traffic calming schemes, and fight court cases will be huge and paid for by the good British citizen.

A 20MPH limit may encourage faster drivers to overtake those drivers adhearing to the limit creating more accidents...

The problem with 20mph limits is pure and simple. If you put blanket limits on a whole area, people won't adhere to them on the whole so the local councils will introduce more and more traffic calming measures (new suspension or front splitters anyone??). Time for a Chelsea Tractor maybe? It's a joke.

Its not a bad idea,BUT it will encourage more cyclists like myself(mountain bike). It would be a great waste of some fast performance cars by having stupidly slow speed limits.

We have a few round here. Needless to say, they are widely ignored, and the mini roundabouts they also put in are driven straight over

Are 20mph limits actually legally enforceable.
It may have changed but there certainly used to be no requirement to fit a speedo to any vehicle not capable of exceding 30mph.
Certainly older mopeds didn't have them in many cases and milk floats i believe.

And kids on BMX bikes, i would imagin you could probably run through at around 20mph too. Be great to see someone get a ticket for running to fast in a 20 limit.

Unless they go for a big threshold, most cyclists will be capable of setting off a 20mph Gatso without too much trouble, it'd probably be quite a good laugh to put on hoodies and zoom around setting them off, resulting in an entire roll of film filled with shots of receding (and anonymous) cyclists.

What else? Would it be possible to set one off riding a horse?

I can see this developing into a sport for the urban gentleman, "setting off low-speed cameras using the most contrived conveyance possible".

I actually believe that there are some roads/zones in which a 20mph limit would be sensible, but `to avoid confusing the motorist' some local authorities apparently want to bring in a blanket 20mph limit in what they deem a built up area. Its this, one size fits all, approach which devalues speed limits by lowering/using them where they are NOT appropriate. If the Local authorities want to `cry wolf'at every opportunity, they should not then be surprised, if people stop believing them and ignore limits altogether.
