RV8 head types

As I understand it, there's at least 2 types (maybe more), with a major difference being the 'extra' (and I believe redundant) row of bolt holes on the older style. Are they readily interchangable, and can the lugs for the redundant holes simply be machined off to replicate the later type? Seems pointless carrying unnecessary material about (and yep, I should have looked before I bought... )
