i have a 16v kr block in my mk2 golf and for the umpteenth time i have taken the head off and replaced parts in it the second to last time i replaced 6 tappets (that seemed to be shot) as it was tapping loudly at idle and louder on revs, it didn't cure the problem 4000 miles later and my tensioner wheel decided to depart from the vehicle so i took the opportunity to replace the rest of the tappets which i have done today along with 6 valves that i bent when the tensioner wheel came off, i have just started the car and it's still tapping???? whats wrong please help!!!!!

The hydraulic tappets wear out its a common problem, most 'tuners' replace them with shimmed solids.

all the tappets have been replaced and this is the first time it's been started with them in, i have had a good look at it today and found the crank pully wheel has a woodruff key to lock it in place on close inspection when i cleaned it up there is about 2-3mm off one side of it which i rekon would cause a bit of valve slap, hence the noise!

It might also be worth checking/changing your oil pump. My A4 1.8T had this problem.

no i'm afraid it's not sorted as the woodruff key is non removable and the part is no longer available from vw!
