iv'e heard two stories from people who should know, one told me the older lambo's like countaches caught fire due to fuel leaks around the carbs. another told me the cats on some cars can get so hot if unburned fuel gets near, that can ignite, on some k series lotus's for example. don't think either would apply to a new lambo?

A Gallardo would be fuel injected wouldn't it? Hence no carbs.

In most cases they have been E Gear (lambo cars) or F1 (ferrari's)>

in every case so far i have heard it has been either a faulty transmission line, a damanged transmission line or a badly fitted one.

In the faulty case, lamborghini NA reported that the E GEAR transmission line had some sort of design fault that meant it got damaged easily during a service, in the case of a new G spider that went up in the states the line cracked spraying transmission fluid over the very hot engine and causes a flash fire. Lamborghini have modified the E Gear tran line as far as i am aware but its a reminder to everyone to

Do you have proof on this? Or just anecodtal evidence?

I suspect it's not that simple (Lambos and F-cars and others have burnt pre flappy paddles).

I suspect that there are plenty of reasons why these happen, though poor hose/line unions would seem to be becoming probable as the general cause (whether oil, fuel or otherwise).

Also, mid engined cars are "compromised" in terms of fuel tank placement. Which I doubt helps..

Most car fires tend to be from oil or brake fluid both of which will burn spontainiously if they hit a very hot exhaust.

Petrol on the other hand vapourises and needs an external ignition source.

So the e-gear / F1 hydraulics theory does hold some potential truth.
