my drivers side wing mirror has suddenly become very loose and is dropping. the whole mirror can be turned through 350 degrees several times as if you are unscrewing it from the door. At fist I thought it was a screw on design so I could just turn it clock wise to tighten but that isnt the case. Perhaps the screws to tighten it are somewhere hidding inside the door ?? but how do i get to it if so.

please help as I cant really drive it right now without no driver wing mirror

Phil its a 4.2 is it?, if it is you turn top half of wing mirror either way, which will reveal "Allen keys" one either side & re - tighten up.

It's a real pig to fix a loose mirror. The parts concerned are:

1. A captive nut, bonded into the door.

2. A boss which screws into this nut. Pictured here with a plastic washer to seal out the weather.

3. A turret which sits on the boss and is free to turn, until secured in place by a grub screw at 90° to the axis which screws through a thread on the turret and tightens up against the boss. The grub screw is visible at the base of the turret.

4. The main mirror frame which mounts on top of the turret with a rubber bush separating the two. The frame is secured to the turret from the bottom (accessed through the base of the turret) by a machine screw (or a self tapper on earlier arrangements). Neither the screw nor the rubber bush are shown in this picture. The new frame pictured already has the front plastic bezel mounted. The old frame in the background has the mounting point broken off.

I replaced mine because the frame was broken. This meant I was able to remove all the plastic outer bits first. In my case, if (as I suspect in your case) the grub screw had been loose, I found it would have been impossible to access it with the whole assembly screwed to the door, although I've seen posts on here that suggest you can tighten the grub screw with the mirror in situ. Good luck!
