Yes, if there is sufficient space, visibility etc that I am confident that I'd be able to do so safely.

Absolutely. And Becca is right in what she says.

Whether or not I would pass is going to depend on:

  • Vision up the road.
  • Grip levels for swift safe acceleration to pass the car in front
  • Standing water hazards that could affect grip or splash the car being passed in an unsafe way
I'd take all that into account and, if still safe, I'll go by. Some people lose all confidence in the rain and travel 30mph below the speed limit. I'm certainly not going to wait behind them if an oppo to pass comes up.

Do you pass in the dry?

The questions you ask yourself are exactly the same.

If it's safe and legal, yes.

If it's either not safe, or not legal, then no.

Judging by some of the numpties I've been stuck behind over the last few (clear, bright, dry) days, some people lose all confidence in the car.

Becca et al,

Keep in mind during your course...discuss with your Observer...

On a single NSL carriageway road...60MPH, you are looking for a 15 MPH differential between you and the car ahead before you consider a safe overtake...if you do not have this...don't bother.

BOF.

PS - How is the course going?

So, if we are working on complying with the NSL, then that means do not overtake something travelling over 45? Seems sensible to me.

Going to depend isn't it. I've overtaken cars doing a steady 55 legally...on A30 in Wiltshire with mile long visibility.

Agreed,

I should have highlighted SAFE...where you have long vision of any possibilty of side road conflicts...go for it.

Cheers BOF

I actually don't tend to overtake on said single carriageway roads for that reason - in a 1.4l Micra a lot of the time the speed/acceleration isn't up to the job in the time window I have, particularly if there's any risk that whatever I'm overtaking might decide to speed up as I go.

Course is going brilliantly, I'm really enjoying it. 3rd run was last Sunday, prob'ly looking to take the test in about six weeks time (after another 2 or 3 runs). Thanks for asking smile

Surely the speed diffential depends on the clear distance ahead which is visible ? ie on a 2 mile long straight with no oncoming traffic I'm sure you could overtake safely with less than a 15 mph differential.
