3.2 Carrera - running rough
Discussion
Hello all,
I have been looking after a friends '89 3.2 Carrera for about a year now whilst he is overseas. When I picked it up, it was running pretty rough, a bit 'spluttery' at idle, would be very hesitant under accelaration till about 3k rpn then seem to clear its throat, and accelarate cleanly from there upward. At idle, if you blip the throttle, it splutters a lot, and almost backfires.
As I don't use it much, I thought I would wait till I got it serviced for someone to look at it. Did about 1k miles in the past 12 months, and took it into RGA for a full going over, major service was done inc all plugs filters etc. Its come back and is running exactly the same! Now I am going to speak to Bob at RGA again, as he said it was now running fine when he gave it back, but in the meantime are there any opinions on here as to what it may be?
A few further bits of info incase it may help - the car runs a LOT better from cold for the first 5 mins or so, then starts getting worse as it warms up. The car hasn't been used an awful lot in its life, my mate bought it back in about '92, hardly drove it, and it has only covered 40k miles in its life, although has been serviced every year.
I am finding the car really good fun and retro, so would be nice to get it running smoothly, as it could be great to blat around in the summer!
Look forward to receiving opinions....

Where do you start ?
New distributor cap arm and leads.
Check fuel lines for corrosion, replace if necessary
Change fuel filter.
Remove MAF sensor, clean and inspect for wear, refit or replace.
Remove injectors and lines, have the injectors pressure tested, and replaced if needed.
Refit.
Check flywheel sensor adjustment, and all connectors.
Remove brain from beneath ns front seat, and send for testing on oscilloscope.
Replace components if needed. Clean all connectors on the DME circuit board, contact lube and replace.
Check engine earths, alternator output, and battery.
That lots going to keep you busy for the next 3 to 4 weeks.
Looking forward to the update.
Alternatively fill the tank with some Ultimate and a decent injector cleaner.
Remember to stick to the manufacturers doses. Check your oil level, and top-up if needed.
Check your tyre pressures while your there.
Then....
Take it out for a nice run [caning] A good hour of spirited progressive motorway driving.
Get the revs up regularly to 4k, 5k, 6k and flex the engine through its power band.
Give engine a nice clear out.
Good luck.

the fact its temp related and intermittent suggests it could be Cylinder Head Temp (CHT) sensor related - see here for more http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&a...I have been looking after a friends '89 3.2 Carrera for about a year now whilst he is overseas. I had mine changed, as the car would jolt violently on occasions once warmed up. Plus there was part design change at some point (two wires opposed to one) and with your car having only covered 40k miles, its prolly on the original obsolete part - worth changing anyway.
Good luck
