My alternator went today, battery warning light came on and I hoped I could nurse her home but conked out just outside of Peterborough.
Chap from the AA came out, checked the 100amp and all OK, tested the alternator but it was producing a max of 2volts under load and nothing on idle. Got me home on his emergency power pack, but I now have my car on the drive with a stone dead battery.
How easy a job is it to change the alternator (it's a 97 serpentine 400) bearing in mind I've never done this before? I've done basic stuff like brakes etc though.
Also, wheres best to buy one from and how much am I looking at? I'd rather a recon as I know it'll be a damned site cheaper than new - would any old motor factor have them or is it dealer only? Or would it be cheaper to just get mine recon'd? If so where and how much?

Other than that - fantastic day for driving!!

I replaced one on my last Chim and it was dead easy. Unbolt one, bolt in another. Just make sure you note which leads go where.

You should be able to get one from a motor factor, just give them the brand and part number.

No - you got me wrong - the ouch was just my bank balance having a hissy (spent a grand only last month on new shocks and bushes) and now this.
Managed to find one at an auto electrical place near me for £120 plus VAT on an exchange basis so going with that. Saves faffing about with post etc.
Just got to attempt to fit it now - hopefully an easyish job for someone such as me with minimal mechanical skills.

It was about £100, exchange I think. Over a year ago now so can't be sure as I sold the car and all the paperwork went with it.
