Blip the imobilser so the car is ready for starting - took me a week to discover this...

There's a newer version of the software with a multicar background (yellow car)
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dave.hinns/software.h...

The speed 6 doc also gives a good overview.

Check the comms setting of the software:
Press F10 with the software running.

Settings on mine for Com 1 are :-
BPS=9600
Data bits=8
Parity=none
Flow Contrl=none

make sure this corresponds with the pc settings. I take it you are using a laptop with Com1 used?

Worse case scenario is I'll be at Supercar Sunday next weekend at Gaydon - your neck of the woods? It would be no problem for me to put the laptop in the boot.

Press F5 twice...

Are you 9 pin serial to 9 pin serial, or usb to 9 pin serial?

AH USB

have you checked your USB port is coming up as Com1 as the software defaults to expect this. I think F5/F10 changes this, but I found it easier to change my serial ports around so that the USB to serial device was Com1

P.S. Section G of the workshop manual explains how to setup the parameters so it's well worth a read.
