3.2 intermittent speedo failure

The speedo on my 3.2 occasionally fails. Usually after start up, but I think once on the move. The illumination works but the needle and odometer remain stationary. Next day, start car, everythings working perfectly. I've removed the speedo and checked all the connections, but there's nothing obvious.
Any ideas?

Sounds like good way to keep the miles low! (sorry, I've no sensible idea to help)

There is a connector, under a plate by the rear seat heelboard. Forgive my lack of precision but it is a long time since I had one apart.
I believe that the speed sensor pick-up is on the gearbox.
