Would some kind soul advise me how to get at the door switch for the passenger side please? I don't want to hack the door card to bits if there's a nice simple way to do it.

The internal switch works fine but the mirror switch won't play. Any thoughts on where the problem might lie?

Whilst I'm at it, does anyone have an idiots guide to tightening the handbrake too please (98 4.5 Cerb)

To get at the switch in the mirror head, carefully pull the mirror glass out of the head and you will see the switch and connections. I replaced the switch on mine as the terminals had corroded away, only to find that it still didn't work. It turned out to be a dodgy connection in the multi-plug inside the door. I managed to get at this by removing the mirror from the door (2 pins accessed by rotating the mirror head). There was enough slack in the loom to enable me to pull the multi-plug out through the hole in the door. Cleaned the connections up and low and behold it worked.

Hope this helps. Don't know about the handbrake though.

Forgot to add, that if you do take the mirror head off, its a good idea to have a second pair of hands to hold the head otherwise it'll be swinging on the end of about a foot of cable while you're trying to get at the multi-plug in the door. I was fortunate enough to have a 8 year old apprentice on hand.

If it is the switch under the mirror you can get a replacement from RS components, stock code 321-278 for about £5

Yup we've all had this - I think it's the only fault I've had on my car. The RS components switches aren't weather proof ones, hence the corroded contacts.

Alan's car had rubber covers over them - anyone know where they came from?

What's the chances of a ham fisted goon like me breaking the mirror glass smash? Or is it fairly easy to remove?

Yes, I think they are the ones. I need one as well.

Somebody mentioned you can get these from RS, anyone know the part no.?
(Yes, I've searched the equivalent parts thread)

from a previous post of mine

Just done mine. The switches are from RS Components and are under a fiver each. RS Part number 321-278

First you have to carefully pop the mirror off. It's held in by 4 plastic catches. I started gently on an outside corner. Don't yank too much as it's heated and there are wires to remove.

It then helps to seperate the mirror into two halves. There are 4 obvious phillips screws inside the mirror, but there's one underneath as well, hidden by the mirror stem. You have to fold the mirror back to get to that one.

The switch itself has a nut holding it in. You need to undo this

The new switch comes without wires, and mine were just long enough so I added new wires and then joined to the old one.

Reassemble.

I looked at those - RS sell them and correct exterior versions as well. I also bought red coloured versions for my interior then decided I didn't like them. I think the stainless would look good.

Note that these stainless ones are the 21.5mm versions. The standard buttons are 13.6 so you may need to enlarge the holes?

They are bigger than standard, so holes do need to be made bigger, and you also need to grind some of the metal mirror housing to get them to fit, but they sit flusher to the outside of the mirror & I think they look GREAT ! biggrin

Nice - however note I don't think these are the weather sealed ones. RS sell some that are supposedly sealed

They are waterproof they're IP68 - we've used them on vandal resistant door entry systems for years, their great.

I don't think the original ones were water proof & they lasted 10 years ! wink

But for £10 a pair, I think I'll cope even if they last half that time smash

Turned out that one of the cables in the terminal block connector had corroded away!

Just carried out a temporary repair to get the door working again but methinks it would be better to put a complete new connector block in.
