Griff Chevy, 500GTO?
Discussion
Looked at upping the bhp on my 500 and seemed to hit a wall (metaphorically) regarding power and cost vs reliability.... Mine's had a rebuild not too long ago (prior to me buying it) but there's supposedly weaknesses in the top and bottom end.... What dyu reckon to a nig lump of ls6 GTO and T56 gearbox?... anybody wanna buy a complete RV8 5litre and gearbox?
This has been done before ( see jellison's car) and that was a very neat conversion.
It boils down to how fast do you want to go / can afford?
Doing a LS1 / 6 /7 installation with a box that can handle the torque will probably come to about 5K, once you included the need for custom exhaust manifolds, custom propshaft, custom engine mounts, wiring loom mods and aftermarket / Chevy ECU installation. More if you want a brand new engine and box.
Result will be around 400ish Bhp all day long with a shed load of torque ( considering this myself actually...)
Alternatively you could have a V8 developments engine based on your existing one for about 3.5K which again with after-market ECU should provide 350ish ponies but will be an easy install
Or theres the new TVR power supercharger conversions for about 5K gets you 400ish ponies from your 5ltr
The 'weaknesses' of the 5ltr are as follows:
TVR liners can move in the block
Early 5ltr cranks can snap
Both of which can be addressed with after market parts
All RV8's suffer from top-end weakness where;
The rocker shafts can break
The pads on the rocker can fall off
the steel cups in the rocker get hammered into the aluminum body
again these can all be fixed with after-market parts
Both sets of weaknesses only really materialise if high revs (6000+) are a regular habit, there are plenty of people on 100K miles engines out there.
Pays your money and takes your choice
One last thing is that any power upgrade should be matched by appropriate increases in the braking and suspension areas.

funny you should mention this as ive had a look at LS1/2 engines on fleebay usa this morning and ive worked out you can basically buy an engine and box with loom and ancillaries for $5000 + shipping, which is £2500 in old money yet a 5,0 tvr engine sold for £2500 on uk fleebay yesterday its kind of a streight swap money wise

anyone know what the shipping costa are from the States? I like that 540 Hemi engine
...a better option, which i'm still considering for my car as an alternative, is to buy a new old gen 383ci stroker from a RELIABLE builder (i would never ever buy an engine on e-bay) like for example 'american speed co' which is the builder of Ultima Cars chevy engines...you should also consider to have an alu block as optional to try to keep the over weight of a chevy engine against a rover V8, which is all aluminium.in this case for an american speed engine good for about 460 dinoed hp you have to be ready to spend around 10.000 usd, plus the hassle to fix the mount properly, the uprate trans and diff, etc etc....

If you want to do this, go and buy a Chimp to start with. No reason to spoil a perfectly good Griff
Or give TVR Power a call for one of their SC kits, at least that's considered acceptable
(and relatively easy to reverse)
Yep let’s all stay in the Dark Age; I think its call evolution

Thankfully they don't ship outside US.
