This is an extract from an article on the BBC website:

"Mr Davies notes that between 1994 and 2004 the power of new cars went up by 28%, making them a lot heavier, and so increasing the amount of CO2 they put out, even though no country raised its speed limit to allow cars to use this increased power."

Seriously? This has got to be a mistake or does it show complete ignorance? People dictating policy on a subject they don't understand?

Surely the increase in power has not been an attempt to increase the speed of cars, but as cars have become heavier, due to greater safety legislation and refinement expectations, they have required an increase in power to offset the weight to allow them to travel at a reasonable speed.

This Lib Dem MEP Chris Davis seems like a complete tw*t!! Talking about limiting cars to 100 mph and imposing large fines for manufactures if they make cars that exceed this level. If he believes that stopping cars doing 100mph+ will save the environment surely that means that a limit should be imposed on anything that has the capability of producing more performance/power/heat than is necessary. My thermostat on my central heating could be turned up to 35oc, my oven could can be turned up to 250oc etc etc etc. Are they going to stop us from have more than two lights on in our home at any one time?

Clearly this guy is jumping on the 'save the planet' bandwagon, leave us alone, we can make our own decisions. I would like to see him come to my house and put a black box in my car, he would leave with it shoved up his arse!!

Oh well, if they put a 100mph limit on all cars then we'll just have to work out how to get there in 2 seconds flat! After all as we all know it's only driving fast that burns excessive amounts of fuel not accelerating flat out to get there! Oh and when we have to slow down from our limited 100mph we should all depress the clutch and stamp on the brakes because that way the engine will only be idling and won't be emitting as much CO2!

Right that's global warming sorted for the EC, what's next on the agenda? wink

Or perhaps, if he engaged his brain first, he'd have realised power went up because they have got a lot heavier - stronger structures, ABS systems, more electronics and higher specs. Perhaps he should tax aircon first?

read that the UK contributes 2% towards global warming and cars make up less than 10% of this

This guy is clearly an idiot. More power does not make a car heavier, nor does it make it emit more CO2.

They are still labouring this crap about CO2 causing climate change when it is actually a product of it. Lib Dems are wannabe tree-huggers and lentilistas and do not have the necessary intelligence or education to understand the complex system that is the modern motor vehicle.

Politicians are all twunts...

Bury the loud-pedal in the carpet while you still can - it won't be long before the 'Hooning Laws' of Western Australia are rolled out over here.

Damn their eyes

Maybe the manufacturers should concentrate on making high specific output cars - they tend to give good performance and economy by means of their engineering.

I know my S2000 could deliver very good mpg against its output - I have no idea if it actualy does as I rag it everywhere.

We should fit 500cc engines to Micras that rev to 15,000rpm and pump out 100bhp smile

I think that there is a 'secret' advert somewhere in the internal newsletters of the Member States. It says 'Got a few complete w*nkers that you want to promote to oblivion? Make them MEP's, sit back and have a laugh at the utter shite they try to make EU Law.'

Straight cucumbers and bananas, FFS!

The entire LibDem circus has one-way tickets to Brussels - sort of similar to spies in WWII having a cyanide pill; political suicide awaits.

As to Sir Menzies Campbell, running with a Zimmer frame is pretty tough and being a Party Leader with dyslexia is even worse. Ming the Merciless, or Ming the Pointless?
