Please can anyone give me come pointers? I'm new to the whole TVR screen and have just persuaded my boy-f to part with his beloved TT for a proper motor!
We are looking at getting a Chimera or a cerbera and have about 15k to play with.

I've done some homework on the costs of owning one with respect to servicing, parts, TGW but are there any specific pointers that we should consider while we are looking for one?

Any advice would be appreciated

Ta very much!!!

You'll get more Chim for that money than Cerb. But then again, the Cerb is a different beast entirely.

Chims - cheap, plentiful and easy to run.

Cerbs - not really the same.

Have a drive of both, and decide what you want. And then go and find some tunnels...

Chim - Drop top, leisure sports car, not too expensive to fix when it does wrong.
Cerbera - Hard top, mental snarling road-going-racecar. Costs a bloody fortune when it goes wrong (but I love mine).

Having had both I can say that both can be bloody expensive to fix! hehe

True that they are completely different. Chimaera is not just a convertible Cerbera!
Chimaera is fast. Cerbera is extremely mental.
Both are great to drive & sound amazing in their own way.

Have a trawl through the Chim & Cerb sections & see what people say.
Go & look at a few & get some test drives.

The difference between Chim and Cerb is simple..

You need to ask do you see yourself driving through Devon with the wind in your hair, New Seekers on the radio, with chilled bottle of Chablis and picnic hamper in the back,

or...

dribbling down your chin with Megadeath on the stereo and your knickers in the back.

It's the latter everytime for me... but don't tell the missus I wear her undies!hehe

I'd buy a nice Griff 500. Cerb is a bit quicker - but they are a money pit and clutches, starter motors etc go so you need a sorted one. Speed 6 cerbs can be very expensive Chimaera is nice and has a big boot - but the Griff is the real deal, lots of power, confy cosy inside, inexpensive to fix - compared to the Cerb and drop dead gorgeous looks

Griff 500 is exactly the same as the 500 Chim though - only not as pretty!

On topic - I had exactly the same dilema when I purchased my Chim but the 'potential' running costs of the Cerb eventually put me off. Saying that my Chim hasn't exactly been cheap to run over the last 2 1/2 years. I also decided I wanted the roofless option and am very glad I decided on the Chim for that reason. The Chim is easier to drive, the cerb feels like you're looking out a pillar box as it has a very narrow windscreen, it is a hell of a lot faster though.
I eventually plumped for my current 400, having my sensible cap on at the time and wanting to start my first foray into performance cars with the smaller engine. Now, having gotten used to the power I wish I'd tried to find a 450.
My advice would be to try both - see what you feel most comfortable with and also what your budget will allow, not only in purchasing power but also in maintenance. A Chim a=on average will cost around 1-1.5k a year (exc tax and insurance) a cerb probably double that.
15k will get you one of the very latest Chims and a very good choice of cars, for a cerb it'll be slightly older and won't give you as wide a choice though there are still good ones out there for that sort of price.
Not sure how close to Leamington Spa you both are but I'll be up there on Saturday visiting a mate and would gladly meet up for a pint and show you round my car, talk about my experiences as an owner etc...

Thanks for the offer, but this weekend is mannic!! i'll bear it in mind for the future, I could do with someone talking my fella round to a chimmy cause he's hell bent on a cerb and i'm frightened by the costs!!!

Plus if it's your second car surely it's a must for a Drop Top??!!!

Thanks for all your comments - are there any particular things that I should be keeping an eye out for wen looking. Any must ask questions???

Chimera v Cerbera
2 seats v 4 seats
220-240 bhp v 350-400bhp
alleged 1.5k running costs v 3k running costs, but these vary widely

You are not too far from me, would be happy to show you a V8S, my Cerb's still being repaired at the moment. A good idea would be to come along to Ashby Folville Tuesday night, if the weather's OK there will be several hundred cars there and usually a representation of TVR from M to Sagaris/Tuscan. Dave

if you want classic lines and enough power for fun driving you must consider the griffith 500

drive the cerb and the chim but dont forget the best of all!

running cost for either the chim or griff will be around the £1000 a year and if work needs to be done you must sort it IMHO otherwise these machines will either let you down or be dangerous at speed
