Hi Guys - I've got a 2002 996

has now done 31k miles (2k since bought about three weeks ago biggrin )

- last serviced in April '06 at 26k - so I guess something is now due...

has had 4 services to date which are all chalked up as 'minor'

from looking at the service book, the difference between a major and a minor looks like a load of inspections polyrib belt/gaitors confused

brake fluid was done last year -

I've heard there is a low mileage service - does this gain an official stamp?

ta in advance!

The 48 month service is a "major" major one, with plug changes and lots of other exciting stuff - hence it costs more than a normal major one

is the likely reason that mine hasn't had one as it'd just done 26k at the time?

its full OPC history so I can't imagine it would have been overlooked.....

Have you tried calling the dealers that serviced it to see if they'll tell you what was done? They will have done whatever they were instructed to - if the customer said "what's the cheapest service, but will still get the book stamped" that's what they'll do.

If it's not had them I would suggest a set of plugs and a polybelt are worthwhile doing now it's 5 years old. If you don't do them now, you'll only do them later - why not have more peace of mind for yourself. Better than waiting for Porsche assist on the hard shoulder whilst counting the number of pieces your belt broke into.........

I had 23k on mine when the OPC told me I needed the 48 month, regardless of when I had a minor service...

It's just a requirement of all 996s when they are 48 months old I'm afraid...

Missing it means invalidating the warranty..

er.. they're all from official porsche centres

I got a 111 point inspection and warranty when I bought the car - are you suggesting that this is invalid?

The servicing for the 996 is 12k or annually, 24k, 48k and multiples -
36k = 12k, 60k = 24k, 96k = 48k.

Additional service items - Brake and Clutch fluid every 2 yrs, Airbag check every 4 yrs (till 10yrs then every 2yrs) Spark plugs at 48k but no later than 4 yrs. Polyvee belt 48k, fuel filter 48k, Engine and Gearbox mount inspection etc.

Your car has a full service history, being annually serviced. In reality the 12k / minor service only differs from a 24k by not including the engine air filter, everything else is the same. (though the oil filter is omitted by Porsche on the minor, most customers opt for one as a matter of course). Most low mileage cars tend to get the basics done - a question of economics.
I would suggest your car has a 48k service, the plugs and others are essentially overdue on time rather than mileage. I would urge you to maintain the warranty criteria, it is a comfort - it doesn't cover everything but it is nice to have.

Be careful mate. Your car has not had the recommended services by the sound of it. It should have

12k/1yr* Minor
12k later/1yr later* Major
12k later/1yr later* Minor
12k later/1yr later* Major plus belt plus fuel filter.

Brake fluid every 2 years
Plugs every 48k/4yrs since last change*

Transmission fluids 96k/192k

*whichever comes first

The next service in the sequence MUST be done less than one year after the previous one if 12k hasn't been put on the car since. If I were you I'd speak to Porsche quick.

The OPC would have issued the warranty so at that stage any previous missed services are forgotten about and not an issue BUT unfortunately it sounds like there is a lot of stuff due and your next service is late on time as it stands (should have been done in April) now so you're outside of the requirement to keep the warranty up.

I'd sit down with the service manager of OPC and work out what it needs - and make SURE they confirm that you are OK on the warranty front in writing. It's only valid if you keep up the schedule according to the Porsche requirement. Of course they won't bring this up until you claim.

Let us know what happens, mate. If you need any help then PM mail.

This is no use now in this particular situation, but shows how it's often worthwhile having a service done and getting the OPC warranty inspection done for free at the same time, rather than paying out twice (as has happened here).

hmmmm scratchchin

not sure I've been clear on the chronology:

at the time of issuing the warranty, a service was already technically overdue (on time, not miles - had covered less than 4000 since the previous one...)

I've been over the service book with a fine tooth comb and the difference between 'major maintainance'

as per the service book are a series of inspections - which I've got logged porsche paper as part of the 111 point check....

I'm happy to shell out for a major service, but would be massively fked off were i to find that the £895 warranty I was sold was invalid on the basis of an already existing 'hole' in the service schedule......

logically - I'd say the spark plugs should have been done last year (being the fourth service (26k miles) - so I'll have these done this time around.

From the looks of it the polyrib belt should be done at 48k miles and is not time sensitive....

Bergs....

The good news is that because the OPC have just issued the warranty , it's the work carried out going forward that will affect the warranty .

The bad news is , there's a bit of a list of stuff to do.

The previous owner was a bit of a tightarse I fear..

In which case, you may get some consideration off them regarding the cost if you are going to the same OPC and haven't done many miles since the inspection.

Probably why he bought a green porker hehe

In all seriousness, price paid for the car reflected the need for servicing - it's just the potential of a warranty issue that is concerning me..... then again how unlucky would you have to be......

says the guy who bought a green car on the 13th of the month, which was originally registered on april 1st....
