1996 4.0 with a weeping master cylinder
Is this a TVR part or donated from something else? Is it likely to be just the seals or a scored bore? Do I chance a seal kit or just replace? If anyone has a part number and approximate pricing I would be most grateful.

Might have problems getting home tonight as 1st and 2nd were getting tricky near the end of the drive into the office this morning. (only 20 miles or so )

Has anyone had this done at a dealer lately if so how much appprox?

Cheers in advance

Have heard of people doing the seal-kit thang, but I never did get to the bottom of the part nos. etc... even after speaking with Lucas/Girling. Ended up buying a new M/cyl from TMS. £51.56 inc. Enjoy fitting it won't you (not)

Managed to get home with only 22 gear changes. This includes going through the centre of Newcastle and over the bridge. Why is the numpties queue up infront of you when you want a nice clear run.

Is the M/cylinder really that hard to fit? What spanner (haynes) rating we talking here. If its a five I'd better order the sacrificial chickens with the part

I will get a price off HHC tomorrow and if its not mad then I won't be hanging upside down in the drivers footwell.

Strangely enough I've just been quoted for a new master cylinder and slave cylinder at 175 pounds including VAT fitted by an independant in Newcastle although that is for a 400SE which might be cheaper than the parts for a Chimaera. They got the prices from HHC today.

Phoned HHC today and got a rough quote of £120. Part + probably 1 hour to fit (hopefully). Booked in to get it done and test drive a V8 cerbera while I'm there.

Lesley is that a white 400SE? What independant are you using?

Had mine done at Mole Valley in April 02, as part of the service. £74.25 for labour and £73.88 for the parts.

Yes it is a white 400SE. Sounds like you've seen it about somewhere. The independant I use is R.P Woods. They are just at the top of my street which is very handy but they know their stuff, and they know the people at HHC. I've also seen a Griff and at least one Chimeara being serviced there.

Usually hear it before I see it and that includes when I'm driving mine. Generally around Cradlewell and Quayside areas that I have seen it if its you. Your car is the reason I started looking at TVRs to buy a couple of years ago. I had promised myself one at some stage but put it at the back of my mind for years. I was looking for a new car (ordinary) and my partner had a company car. Yours drove past one day and I thought I have the money I have the backup transport why don't I buy a TVR now. 2 and a bit years on I'm selling it and looking for another.

See its all your fault that I spend all my money on TVR. If you haven't had it for 2 years you can blame it on the previous owner if you like.

See ya around

Yes however, on a Wedge everything is nice and easy and quick. On a GRiff/Chimaera, the cylinder is inside the wing and difficult to get to so it can take a lot longer to change.

Yet again Steve comes forward with the full information. However, had mine die on me recently (can happen at any time apparently) and took it to a local garage that has done quite a lot of work on TVR's. They ended up doing the work for less than £100 including the part and fitting! Pretty damn good and when I questioned why it was so low, they then went on to explain that, although the cylinder is in the wing, it is actually one of the easier parts to replace in a TVR. The connectors are easy to get to and the part is itself an off-the-shelf one.. could it be a Ford part?

Still, its all relative, but in general you could have had a much more expensive part go wrong... Once fixed it should be good for a pretty long time.

Cheers,

Paul

All fixed now for just over £100. Not bad really and saved me the hassle of doing it myself. I drove a cerby 4.2 while I was getting the car done. Why didn't I buy one earlier? Absolutely amazing car. I've always loved the looks but boy does it have the go to match. This particular one had a sports exhaust so it sounded pretty good aswell. I'm off now to sell a kidney or something so I can buy it.

Cheers
