535d tyre advice

hi everyone,

my 535 will be needing new tyres shortly so i was looking for a bit of advice concerning tyre choice.

i have heard that there may be a better tyre than the standard goodyear runflats. my first thought was to look at michelin pilot sports, but it seems they don't make them in 245 40 18's.

any suggestions appreciated as i want to get the most out of the cars handling!

Are you looking to keep runflats? I believe Michelin now have a Pilot Sport Runflat, is that what you meant?

I've thought about it, and will probably stick with runflats just to save the hassle of sorting out a spare etc.

I called a tyre place about the michelin pilots - i think they are called zp's or something like that, and was told they were unavailble in the size i needed.

to be honest i'm not sure of any other options, but have heard that there are definately some to avoid

There is a 2nd generation RFT from Dunlop called the Sport01 DSST that is better than the original NCT5 Goodyear. Might be worth trying them instead? I've got 4 Goodyears for sale in the classifieds, but they come with 4 alloys too!

Continentals or Pirellis are the way forward IMO.

I've now changed my 18's for a set of 19's with normal tyres. What a difference. IMHO, ditch the runflats. They make the car handle so poorly when compared with non-RFT's.

I also bought a space saver and wheel brace etc from BMW just in case.

Just binned my Dunlop Sport 01 DDST Runflats for Falken FK452's all round. Cost around £400. Plus the spacesaver from BMW so you're looking at around £500 all in. Agreed with the comments above - the handling and ride are significantly improved. Also, non-RFTs are probably cheaper in the long term due to the additional costs of RFTs and the fact that getting a puncture repaired in a runflat is tricky - you're almost always looking at a new tyre.
