I've just fitted my kenwood CD head, when I removed the pioneer(assuming it was factory fitted)there was what looks like a large core earth strap taped up with the aerial coax, attached to a stud on the back, but there's no stud on the back of the kenwood, it seems to work OK though without it, is it there for a specific reason?

Secondly there was a thin 2 core wire taped to the iso cd harness with a thin red wire and a screened white core wire stripped back but not connected to anything -any offers as to what it might be off??

I'm no expert but have had a few car stereos in my time.

The main problem that you could experience is whistling through the head which is picked up from the alternator. This tends to happen when you add an amplifier to the party.

My everyday 'euro-box' Golf has a reasonable system as standard but I added an amp new front speakers and a sub. It casued a terrible noise when the engine was running. This was finally tracked down to a poor earth on the 6 disk in dash changer. It was earthed and the problem all but went away.

I'm not sure if there may be enough earth through the chasis/other wires. I'll admit to knowing very little about all of the other wires that go in/out of the head unit.

Telephone any good supplier (so not Hal~@!ds) and ask them. Where did you buy it? The source should be happy to help unless it was the above mentioned outlet. Not that they are no good but your question requires the knowledge of a specialist.

Short answer on the other hand is..... If it's not causing a problem don't worry.

Most head units have a tapped hole at the back in the centre for a support stud which sometimes has a rubber mounting pushed over it. It is also a very good way of earthing the unit when the stud is not used so if there was going to be an earth strap connected to the head unit in any way this would be a good way of doing it. The outer sheath of the coaxial also needs to be earthed so the strap being taped to it could be a really crap way of connecting the two? The head unit is earthed through the iso plug so it could be that the outer coaxial was earthed in this way as there is no metal body to pick up an earth for the aerial from.

The business about interference when fitting an amp is a common one. An amp multiplies up all the sound, not just the goods bits. Interference that was once unheard becomes very obvious when multiplied up by an amp, it was there all along it’s just you could not hear it. Good quality more expensive amps have built in suppression, cheaper ones don’t, that is why they cost more, it’s not just the badge that puts the price up.

The two strand cable could be a take off for a boot changer that is no longer on car.

Hope this may help,

Ivan
