knocking noises, any ideas?

Got a bit of a.............. well kind of bonking noise from the steering column, thought it was the roll bar bushes but they have checked out ok, and the noise is only when the steering wheel is turned slightly.
Today its started getting worse.
Any ideas about possible bearing failures or 'bits' coming loose that might just need some tightening attention?

Any ideas, however random, welcomed.

Could it be a wheel bearing maybe? Is there any "squealing" when turning corners? Can you get any movement in the wheel on the hub if you try to rock it by hand at the wheel (not the steering wheel)?

Other than that, maybe something to do with the steering rack? Not much help, sorry - I'd be calling my local friendly mechanic...

Defo not a wheel bearing!!
with 5000k on the clock i reckon its just something come loose, ill have to clear the beer cans out ( cheeky git horn) and have a look this weekend.
Looks like ill be taking apart the steering column area then!!
Anyone intrested???

might be worth a look where the steering column leaves the cabin. Around the fuse box area are a number of boxes and one of these could of slipped out of position and be resting on the column so when you turn it knocks and you feel it through the steering wheel.

Just reading back through my post and realised i never did update this!!

It turned out to be the steering wheel 'boss' onto which the steering wheel is bolted with 6 hex head bolts.
once removed and unplugged, the boss also has 5 ( i think) hex head bolts of which, ALL were loose, once tightened all was fine......
However, if you do take off the steering wheel and do not re-fit it before trying to start the engine itll confuse the crap out of ya!!
Turns out you need to have the steering wheel attached to make the earth path for the wiring loom and hence get the engine lights on to start it!!

Who would have thought!!
