Someone must have been thru this.

Have a boring family car.
Also have a GT3.
Also have wife, 3 under 5 kids.
The boys love cars.
Wife positively encourages my 911 habit, forced to get my first one, encourages track days etc etc. No issues there.

Issue is when we go out, eg take the boys out, south coast, country walks, national trust places at weekends, I want to take the GT3 but can't cos only 2 seater. Belive me when i say its painful driving down to the south coast past goodwood on those great roads in the bloody estate car when there's a GT3 in the garage!
Same with shows, GFOS, various porsche meets etc.
One solution i tried was take one of the boys only - but the one at home feels awful and tbh so do i.

So where does one go after a GT3. Or does one live with crappy drive all the time except when on own or at track day.....

Can't have more than one 911. Need big estate car for home and lugging crap around.

Sell GT3 - get 993TT? (996 TT extended test drive left me feeling a bit cold, fkin quick tho it was - same with 997/S). Or go back to 993 C2 like my old one? Or get an oldie - pre impact bumper, 2.4S or somet....964 3.6 turbo.....

Keep GT3, get fast family car - M5, RS6 etc - could do but its still not a porsche. Cayenne S?

I love the gt3 but offers so restricted opps to drive it given my circumstances. But does that make it extra special or does it just mean don't enjoy 90% of your driving......

Just thinking out loud..

Ajit.

Exact model designation escapes me at the moment but wasn't there an Audi estate not so long ago that had Porsche under trimmings?

Yes, the RS2.
Theres a few in the classifieds...
LHD and 110k http://pistonheads.com/sales/176540.htm £9k
RHD, 76k and that lovely shade of blue http://pistonheads.com/sales/172770.htm £15.5k
They're a genuine classic and the 0-60 i believe is in under 5.0 secs.

My kids (6 and 3) tire very quickly of being flung round corners and being subjected to full bore accceleration. My point being that can you really enjoy a high performance car to the full with the family on board?

Perhaps better to get a luxo cruiser ideally with drop down TV screens.

Chop the GT3, get a tricked up 968 for track days & cayanne turbo ( used of course) for the family car.
I love my cars, but I am always of the mind that the one I take my wife & kids around in will the best one.
unless you are minded then keep the GT3 and get the cayanne

Install regular 996 seat on pas side & put in rear seats, job done.

Alternativly M3 CSL

Other then that you need 2 cars.

Not quite at the same level but similar - I've a 968CS, three sons; hence an M3 saloon - similar pace & fun, however the imminient arrival of twins has scuppered the M3 > M5 move hence I'll be moving to a so called 'people carrier' which is not motoring in any sense of the word.

I think the post above re. vasectomy is particularly apt!

The upside for me is that I'm planning GT3 Mk2 + grim-vagen...

Check your insurance to see if they look on the GT3 as a 2 seater or a 2+2 ..

I did this recently and my insurance covers the GT3 as a 4 seater..

Then ....

www.quickfitsbs.co.uk

.. will fit the seat belts..

Britax have booster seats that will fit the two rear 'buckets'.

And if you want all 5 of you in the car , start saving now for the Panamera as car 2!

2 options i genuinely didn't think of:

1 turn gt3 into a 2+2
2 M3csl. A mate had an M3 and i was impressed, wonderful zingy engine but no steering feel (that could just have been his knackered setup or is it typical)

I like the idea of the former - problem is i'd ahve to get rid of my rollcage, and hence couldnt use my harnesses on trackdays. i feel v exposed on track without harnesses....
this sounds so i want my cake, and eat it, and have some left over for next week...

Singh...

I know the non-Dad types are going to balk at this , but , life is a compromise once you've got kids . I would very much like to have a GT3 but at the moment there's too many factors conspiring to cheat me out of my dream. Therefore I think you're a very very lucky man to have your '3 , to my mind it'd be very small compromise to have to lose roll cage and harness , but gain two little Singh's , and be able to give em a taste of what switches you on.

... All in my humble of course.. thumbup

Are you sure it's not a case of the driven man in you simply striving for more!!?? .. Nothing wrong with that in it's self , but it's nice to sit back and smell the roses too...
