First the 335i Now the 120D

It would appear that following on from BMW's decision to encrypt the ECU in the 335 it now appears that you cannot remap the latest 1 Series engines. I don't know if it is just the 120D that I have just purchased and Gareth (G Man) is about to take delivery of in the 1 series range, but it would now appear that as BMW launch a new or revised engine they are encrypting the ECU's.

I'm guessing that as the 3 Series Coupe has just received the same 177hp diesel engine in it, anyone buying one of those may also find that it can't be remapped.

Hartge can map the 335i up to 360hp (and then up to 381hp with further engine mods).. but its stupidly expensive! about £10,000 for the full Hartge conversion.

My advice is wait until DMS or Superchips get something... DMS actually gave up trying on their 335i. (as far as I know they did remap a 335i up to 385bhp but it was unreliable)

Sooner or later someone will get hold of the encryption codes for these ECU's, and the 335i will have around 380hp and the 120d should manage around 210bhp (IMO)

don't forget that chipping the 335i (or 120D) is something possible in the U.S...

Procede offer a 'plug and play' device that sits inside your ECU box and (quite crudely) up's the boost flatly across the rev range to achieve its hp gain. Procede 335's are apparently returning figures of 360hp (not sure about the 120D) they are about £300... but it comes down to how much you want to look after your engine I suppose...
