Hi All I am off to Lemans on Thursday and a mate has lent me this lense. He has also said I can buy it for £80 if I want. Is this a good lense or should I go for the Nikon Af 70-300/4.0-5.6 G Black

I forgot to say my camera is a D80 with a 135mm kit lense.

It’s an ok walkabout lens, but nothing overly special. I did have the Tamron 28-300 which I sold a little while ago, this was regarded as the better of the two. For general pic’s it will be good enough.

I sold the Tamron for £150, so £80 is a good price. The Nikon 70-300G will be a better lens even though it’s bottom of the range – and as you have stated it is faster at f/4.0-5.6 over the f/3.5-6.3, but you would need to decide if the wider 28mm is what you need over the 70mm for its intended use.

If he has lent it to you, just have a look when you get back at the proportion of shots taken below 70mm, with the 70-300 these would have needed a lens change.

Thanks this seems a sensible opinion. I have tried it tonight and for pointy shooty stuff it seems good enough for a novice like me.
