Having spent last Monday bedding the Cerb in at a Brands GP circuit track after the addition of bigger brakes and cooling ducts, new cone diff, lightweight bonnet, stiffer springs and shocks (thankyou Derek/Absolutely Shocks and Dave of GAZ), the Cerb held up well. Only casualty was a worn nearside front wheel bearing due to the loading and probably enhanced camber.

Again huge thanks to Andy at APM for the quality of work that allows the car to go a total of 200 racing miles without a hitch.

The slicks have lasted the 200 miles but have needed to be replaced.

So, after some final fettling by Andy on Friday,we're now ready for Snetterton next Sunday. Finally a track I know that will hopefully suite the Cerb's character which has been enhanced quite dramatically by the new suspension setup, lack of brake fade (the standard 4.2 brakes basically shattered) and additional grunt from the higher diff ratio etc..

If any of you are around come and say hello!

Hi Johnny wavey

was good to meet you on Sunday, and your cerb looked gorgeous going round the track, and off of course.

had to shoot off quickly when the last race finished, so don't know where you finished? glad to see you kept it on the black stuff though, most of the time smile

focused has taken some great shots, incase you hadn't seen them

snetterton pics/TVR tuscan challenge

hopefully see you again racing at Brands?

Came third in Class B, so on the podium twice in a day which was fun. Let Andy Race get away from me at the start, I need to be more determind on the starts and hold my position, still too protective of the Cerb!!

I'm booked in for Cadwell, Rockingham and Brands. In two minds on Cadwell as it's only one race. I'll decide closer to the time.

Jonny

Tracey,

Photo's great, shows the Cerb's new suspension set-up is really managing the bends and that I can obviously push-on more than I am currently doing.

I'm learning loads at the moment about racing and how the car responds with its new set-up and where I can push on more, photos are great at supporting this.

I am obviously no where near its limit.

Hi Johnny
When i see you next (possibly Cadwell Park) i will have to do another step by step photo of you with the new suspension on, and on a bend like the one at Mallory so you can see the difference, glad everything is going well and that you are still enjoying yourself as much as we enjoy watching you in the Cerby.

Kevin, that would be brilliant, as I said before they really help get my head around what the car is doing in the bends and how much more it can take. The Cerb is a different beast to the other TVR's that are being raced so we have to develop and push on with the knowledge and information that we are picking up on the way as there is no other reference point. Hi JonnyW what lengh springs are you using? in comparison to mine, yours looks another inch or three higher. Have you tried shorter springs etc?

Cheers Paul

Paul,

The static photo is of the car at about 100 mph on a progressive right hander at Snetterton so it is at full tilt. Kevin's photo is at Mallory before it was lowered by 5 cms. It is as low as it will go and has the shortest set-up possible on springs that are in the high hundreds, there's no more to go. The combined skills of Andy APM, Dave GAZ and Derek Absolutely Shocks believe that this is the limit on this supension in terms of rigidity, camber, height etc..

The next step is more weight out of it, but after a day being instructed at Thruxton yesterday I do believe that there is a lot more to come out of the car as I develop!

What spec brakes did you replace the standard 4.2 brakes with?

Mine is an early 4.2 and, after my first track day, was looking to at least replace the disks with grooved ones, can’t get them anywhere for the front, bizarrely can for the rear?

have you gone for later 4.5 bells and calipers or all the way with 6 pot calipers?

Jes, It would just be great to see your car running at last, we must catch up.

Erich, I had 4.2 discs for Oulton Park but they shattered at Mallory, still in one piece but crazed throughout. I have the 4.5 ones on now which are better but are tending to warp towards the end of a 20 minute race, pushing the pads back and making braking a two stage effort. It was the same for most competitors, it is the high speeds at Snett and the splitters etc..not allowing the air to flow as well over the discs.

I'm in two minds of racing at Cadwell, if I do I'll run with the current set up and put up with it. If my next outing is Rockingham, I'll probably fit Jools's bigger discs.

Cooling is the key more than anything and Andy APM has ducted air from above the front splitter, probably need another source of air on top of this to be honest.

Jonny - I understand a number of people suffered with brakes overheating at Snett - and they were running either splitters or front air dams with no ducting. On the race Tuscans if people used the TVR air dam (i.e. the one that was legal during the Tuscan Challenge) then they always ran ducting from the round holes in the bonnet to the callipers.

Get Andy to fit an ali cowling around the calliper so the air flow goes to both sides. TVR used to do a high temp carbon cowling that clipped around the calliper, but not sure if you can still get them. You should be ok if you can rig this sort of thing up.

Regards

Andy

Thanks Andy,

APM Andy, thorough as always, put an intake and ducting from the smaller gap underneath the Cerb's indicator to counter the reduced airflow of the splitter. This needs to suck more in so I have found an inlet duct that will collect and force more air in, 285mm x 110mm. I'm also going to remove the inner wheel arch cover to get more air flow, hope this doesn't create lift at 140+yikes

See you at Rockingham I believe?

Yes, we will be at Rockingham, I must put my entry in.

I hope Darren Dowling won't mind me racing No 6 with his engine still in it wink

This is a very interesting thread, glad to read about something more exciting with a Cerb than just polishing it and going to club meetings!

I will be following your racing progress with great interest as even doing the odd track day has already shown up a few brake problems with my cerb. I take it the front splitter is a Carbon Al item, have you noticed much of high speed stability improvement?

Splitter is from Carbon Al and now the car is lowered as far as it will go it does make a difference but it has disturbed the airflow round the brakes, hence the ducting.

The racing is great and the Cerb makes it fun and takes a bit of pressure off because of its uniqueness, but it is proving itself in terms of pace and reliability (thanks to Andy at APM) and I believe I am now in 2nd place in Group B for the season so far after the two 3rds at Snetterton on Sunday.

Come and say hello at Rockingham where I will definately be out on both days, practice on Saturday and qualifying and the two races on Sunday.

Will do but want to do some other things with the car, if I can get my Lex windows in by then I'll go but I can't drive for 4 hours to be turned away with my current cracked windscreen at scrutineering. I've got a lower racing tank to go in plus a few other air venting activities to get right, it will have a hard time over two days at Rockingham and I want it right for there or it will be frustrating.

I'll let you know.
