I have a 1988 350i in a sort of silvery metallic green colour. My question is did TVR, in the late 80's, have a set of standard colours, or did they paint the cars whatever colour the customer wanted? I have seen another 350i for sale, on the Autotrader site I think, that looks a similar colour to mine, it is described as "Ocean Green Metallic". Does anyone know if this was a "std" TVR colour and if so whether it was specific to TVR or whether it was from a mainstream manufacturer.

My understanding (could be wrong!) is that TVR would paint the car whatever colour requested provided it was a standard/available general automotive colour. However, people would often order cars based on the colour combination they had seen in another car cos they then new it'd look okay. So you'll see a few similar exterior coloured cars though often with different interior colours. I know of 4 solid Red 400SE's though all have different colour interiors (Black, Grey/Red, White, Magnolia/Burgundy!). I've got a "mint green" 350 Series 1 which is the same colour as my "smashed" 280i FHC - I can give you the code and a picky.

I have owned 2 light metallic green wedges, I think one was a Ford colour (common on Mk2 Granadas) and the other was a Rover SD1 colour. They both looked the same to me.

I have a 1982 Tasmin, when I spoke to the factory spray shop, I was told the Staff often picked good colours they had seen on other cars. lots of merc and porche colours used. mine is hell bronze (gold) by porche.

Mine is also a '88 350i and it has a gun metal grey exterior and a nice light grey(isch) interior. I also believe that TVR get's you any colour you like.

They had about 16000 standard colours with the Wedges. They have expanded the range to 22000 as customers were claiming that it was too restrictive. My favourite is a a chameleon colour called Manchester Ship Canal. (brown to green to brown)

Well my Tasmin S2 is a Ford colour called Crystal Green, (light silver green, as featured on a lot of late 70s granadas) with matching green interior and glass. I've seen a couple of others the same colour, but it works well so there must be a few more.

Thanks for the info. everyone, I think I may have to take the fuel filler flap into a paint shop and get them to mix me a match.

Colour code for the car should be on vin plate on the inner wing. If the paint shop don't recognise it talk to the factory (TVR) and they should be able to cross reference the TVR paint code to the standard car. My local re-spray place knew of the TVR number.

I have spoken to the factory and anything before 1989 was not put on the computer, they dont know what the codes mean, i went to a good paint shop and spent an hour going through the paint cards.

I think the body paint code is an ICI paint code. It is explained in the 'wedge bible'. I have just been looking into this for my wedge and as you say the factory no longer has details available for cars pre 1989 (KB chassis). If you phone ICI autopaints on 01449 771771, tell the helpful lady the paint code she will give you the name of the paint. I did this yesterday and was told my paint is Jaguar British Racing Green also known as TVR Brooklands Green. Now it is a matter of finding a paint shop that uses ICI paint codes. My local motor factor makes up aerosols but based on holts paints which use different numbers!
