My rev counter appears to work fine ... until it doesn't. When I switch off, it stays where it is when the key was turned, typically c. 1,000 RPM
If I switch on the ignition again it returns to zero. Restart the engine and it runs as expected until the next stop. irked

Isn't this because you've got the dials which start at the top LG (you've got a pre cat I believe)
Mine does something similar although I think it returns to 0 then sinks back to about 1000rpm
The speedo does something similar.

It is a pre-cat with the dials starting at the top, but this is a new issue - it has always returned to zero until Saturday.

Hmm, pretty sure it is meant to do this.

Isnt it known as a tell-tale tacho.
In other words, race derivitive.

Lets the team know where the engine was being reved to when it went bang..

Not as far as I know ... a tell-tale tacho typically has a second needle that is pushed around by the first and sticks at the highest point.

Does it matter?

Mine does this sometimes whizzing right round the dial and stopping pretty much anywhere.

I rather like it,

as long it reads absolutely fine when the engine is running then so what?
