noticed an odd tappety noise developing from my engine and sent it to automedon for a service, clutch and check over, nothing obvious wrong with the valve gear so head had to come off and be inspected - worn valve guides it is. 24,000 miles on clock.

booo - was really looking forward to plastering my car in stickers for LeMans, now im going with neighborino james in his nice Audi S4.

over the last 1-2k i noticed the oil consumsion increasing, the the exhausts almost constantly being black with suit which also led to the whole rear of the car getting dirty quite quick (first thought was the de-cats) but noticed the high revs seemed less eager and finally a very slight nockin noise at idle which got slightly worse but nothing broke, just ovalised the guides.

told its not going to be mega expensive as nothing else was damaged and rest of engine looks good.

its with automedon

Bad news, Graham. Inevitable sometime, though, and think of the fun when you get it back.

excuse my ignorance, but can anyone explain what a tappety noise actually sounds like? is it during excellaration, idle, overun etc? Guess I am just a bit worried I dont know what I should be listening for.

A very loud sewing machine in the engine for top end tappet/valve type noises. Louder than the usual 'needs a 12k service sound effects'. Will probably do it at tickover as well as at high revs.

Bottom end problems tend to be more deep sounding knocking noises. Not always easy to diagnose to the un-trained ear, esp on a 'noisey' engine like the Speed Six.

Sorry to hear the news - maybe ditch that username after all?!

Mine's still sweet at 23k, but have to get on with engine devpt work anyway, typical rolleyes

Have you thought of shelling out a little extra for Autocraft's finger followers? Designed to put a lot less side loading on the valves & guides.

Hi Graham,

Sorry to hear the news. Hope you get it fixed soon.

Oh, and if you decide to upgrade to a 4L RR I know where there's an engine going at the salvages...

i get tappety noises (slight) when the engine first starts up, but then it goes when the car is up to operating temp... should i be bricking it and should i also be taking the car to le mans on friday?

what costs are we talking about for what is being discussed in this thread - best case and worst case?

speed six sounds like a Massey Ferguson on start up anyway ,

from what was printed in sprint these engines are all flawed ....?

wish Al Melling had got TVR maybe R+D for these engines would have continued.

suppose will just have to start saving and think about dropping a Reno diesel engine in the T350 weeping

thanks folks but think im just having it repaired and left as it is, the rest of the engine is fine and i was happy with the way it was, it will be better when it returns but i'm more interested in handling improvements and driving the god damned thing so ill just smile and get on with it, unless anything major goes wrong the engine will stay standard.

Sounds like slight wear only, probably needs a few shims soon. Should be fine IMO, but if it was me I'd keep it below 6.5k rpm during the trip, as valvegear loading & wear is much greater at high rpm. smile

From new my April 2004 engine was tappy and knocky when cold, which went away once the engine started to get warm. It needed a new headgasket last year (not because of the tapping) and the factory replaced a whole lot more while they were in there. The engine is now very quiet and smooth when cold. I've noticed newer cars are less tappety in general so the factory did change something between 2004 and 2006.

Get it looked at, they sound nothing like a tractor if they're fit and well.

This has got me worrying now. I've had mine for about 3 weeks and I'm getting a constant whirring / clicking sound which seems more noticeable now than when I picked it up. It's not especially loud but doesn't go away when the engine's warm. Took it back in earlier this week but the (main) dealer couldn't find anything wrong. It's my first TVR (after 5 years of Lotuses) so I'm not used to the noises yet! I've got an evening track session at Donington on Friday so should I be panicking? It's an early 02 car with 21K miles and had a tappet service when I bought it.

I get that black soot on my exhaust but only on the right hand side one, left being clean as a whistle. This has only been since fitting the power sports pipes, as it bangs and spits on the over run i just assumed it was a little un burnt fuel getting through and landing on the tail pipe. Thats got me worried now. Should i be?
