VW Corrado - common issues?

Right then, I'm looking at a 2 litre 16v Corrado on a G plate and there is one small issue that I'm a bit concerned about - after idling warm, under acceleration there's a slight puff of smoke out of the exhaust. Now, I think the car has been overfilled with oil as there's some residual run down from the filler cap, could this be anything else apart from simply burning off the excess?
Also, are there any other common issues I should be looking for?
Thanks in advance,

Where is the puff of smoke. If its out of the exhaust rear ,it could be the valve stem oil seals on their way out, or maybe even the piston rings(less likely). If its coming from the manifold in the engine bay, it could be residuel oil.
Questions you need to ask are why was the oil topped up in the first place?
To be fair, you're probably just gonna end up putting an ABF bottom ens(out of the seat 2.0 16v)
