I know it's pretty much just for decoration, but can anyone offer instructions for adjusting the handbrake on my 98 4.5 please? It's now at the top of the ratchet and doing b****r all.... not that it did a great deal before laugh

Its a pig.

Pull handbrake up 2 clicks.

Jack back of car up.

Remove both wheels.

You'll see a little hole in the hub of each; in there is a toothed wheel. You need to stick something in there are turn the toothed thing a little until you can't turn the hub by hand.

Then do the other side.

Then put the wheels back on, drop car down, and test handbrake.

Then find its not quite right and do it all again.

A.

Joos did 'mod' to mine, which to this day still works remarkably well, although if i do park on an incline I tend put car into gear as well..smile

Job sorted. Combination of adjusting the shoes and tightening the slack in the cable. The shoe adjustment was easier than the cable to do. It's an absolute barsteward to get to the cable adjuster.

Works beautifully now...two notches on the ratchet and the car actually stands on a slope bounce

Thanks to those who replied.

I'll add this to my "jobs pending on the Cerb" list, methinks.

Can someone give me an idea where the hub needs to be to see the toothed wheel, thanks.

This interests me too. My brake is so poor, previous owners have damaged the trim behind the handbrake lever (chunk missing) as it has been pulled up so many times it now points at the roof eek

The hole in the hub needs to be between the 5 and 6 on a clock face.
Get a torch and shine it through the hole to see properly.
The adjuster is shaped like a double ended bullet with a serrated edged wheel in the middle.

Use a flat bladed screwdriver to click the serrated wheel around.

Thanks, that was easy, not holding out much hope on having a fantastic handbrake but it might work a bit!

its easier to take off exhaust to get to adjusters as the bracket was bent out of shape and had to weld it back in place. bit of a mess but the car stops on slopes....
