My P&J needs a 12k service, but I’m a bit surprised by the price range when doing a search on this hallowed site. I’ve just been quoted £1200 inc VAT from my nearest dealer (2 ½”hours away) in Scotland, this includes fluids and tappet adjustment. They’ve also stated 6-8 hours to do the service, so for fun, let us say £600 labour, £200 for fluids and filters at trade price, that leaves £400 clear profit, plus the profit from the labour and consumables, so £600, 50% profit by per chance?

Anyway, I digress as I have no problem paying good money for a good service, but if I can get the same service for £3-400 less, then maybe it’s worth travelling south? or do the cheaper quotes not tell the full story? perhaps the addition of VAT and fluids etc take it up to the £1000 mark?

Cheers

My feeling on this is that main TVR dealers charge a premium for any labour work and have I been quoted £65 per hour!..I guess servicing etc is a main dealers primary source of income. Given overheads, the profit on the 'odd' sale of a new/used TVR is probably consumed quite quiclkly.

A reputable Indie will usually be able to 'under-cut' any main dealer servicing prices, and carry out as good a job or if not better.

I personally havent used my main dealer since buying the car (except for warranty work) and Im very happy with the level of service and work my Indie has given me.

What constitutes an 'Indie' as opposed to a Main Dealer? As i don't think there are any Main Dealers in the land of sweaty socks!

Did you get the quote from Dreadnought? I'm not due a service till December but would be interested to hear where you go. I got the Heating fixed and an exhaust rattle sorted on Saturday by a garage that does all the TVR work for Alan McDonald cars in Dalkieth. Mulsanne Motors..they are a Bentley and Rolls Royce specialist but seem to know the TVR's well. They only charged me £70....and they did me a massive favour fitting me in at short notice.

Yes Dreadnought. I have used them before when i had the chimeara and they are a good crowd, but £1200 seems a wee bitty steep... i hate the thought of my upgrade budget being eaten into unnecessarily biggrin

£1200 is way over the top for a "standard 12k service"

I'd say £1200 is the max you'd pay for a service and fixing of various small niggles found on the way.

my 12k service including new rear brake pads, tappets, MOT, fixing my broken door button (£150 on its own) and a few other niggles and parts cost £1200

should be looking at around £600 for the service plus another £200 for tappets plus anything else that needs doing.

but surely the actual service is not the major cost...when ever I have mine serviced...there is at least a 1k extra of other stuff that needs doing...or could be done...

err, yes, but i would prefer the baseline service cost to start from £800 before remdial work is carried out as opposed to £1200!!!

Yes i agree with you there, BUT the base cost should be £800 with tappets not £1200......but wouldn't surprise me if you came out with a £1200 bill, but with £1200 base it'd be more like £1700!!

I take it the price has gone up since the last time I used them! This topic was raised in the Regional forum and I made the suggestion that people should think about taking up the deals that are advertised in sprint and make a holiday of it, well a long weekend! With the difference in price, It would probable be a free hol!

I too was getting quoted stupid prices for servicing my Griff in Scotland.
Got on the phone to recommended TVR Indie in Blackpool who uplifted my car on a flatbed, did a full 12k service with free mot chucked in, waxoiled the chassis, replaced some dodgy brake lines and the dist cap and leads,+ some other minor issues - ALL for less than the price of the service quoted to me - they even threw in a free t-shirt!

All I had to do was take a £23 train to Blackpool and the petrol for a nice saunter up the road - top service from top blokes who are, very importantly, TVR enthusiasts and experts.

I know where its going next year....
