Thought I’d buy a convertible for the summer and the Boxster S is the obvious choice. I’ve always liked the Boxster in black, but black is a hard colour to keep clean. Since I'll only be using the Boxster on Weekends I thought I’d get the colour I really want.

Also thought I’d splash out on some decent polish and after a bit of reading decided to go for the Zaino Total Protection Show Car Kit from here

http://www.pro-detailing.co.uk/product.php?prod=35

Was on offer and cost £82 delivered to the door, rather than the usual £110.

I’ve tried a few different brands over the years, and until now Meguiars has been the best I’ve used but, with a serious downside, it’s hard work and very time consuming

In the kit you get

ZFX™ Flash Cure Accelerator Additive
Z-2 PRO™ Show Car Polish for Clear Coated Car Finishes
Z-5 PRO™ Show Car Polish for Swirl Marks and Fine Scratches
Z-6™ Ultra Clean Gloss Enhancer Spray
Z-7™ Show Car Wash
Z-18™ ClayBar

First job, wash the car. I’m pretty skeptical about car shampoos and don’t see why a special car shampoo should be any better than a bit of highly diluted fairly liquid or some other weak detergent. After using the Z7 Show car wash, I can see why. The Z7 doesn’t soap up to produce loads of bubbles and leaves very little residue if it happens to dry on the car, yet the detergent brings off all the grime and fly’s with much elbow grease required.

After washing I tried the Z-18™ ClayBar, it’s meant to remove debris from the surface and leave the paint smooth to the touch ready for polishing, this proved to be over kill because the surface has already been prepared and cleaned when I bought the car. I did find the a few areas where the paint wasn’t as clean as it could be. The ClayBar does seem to work, it’s good at leaving a smooth surface.

Next I tried the Z-5 PRO™ Show Car Polish for Swirl Marks and Fine Scratches, It smells great as all the Zaino products do. It can be applied in sunlight without any probs too. It isn’t very good at removing swirl marks though, the Meguiars is much better at covering fine scratches than the Z5. It’s very easy to apply and after 15mins is ready to come off. Unlike Meguiars it wipes off easily and leaves a high gloss shine, the colour doesn’t seem that deep, but is very, very shiny. You can’t really see in the pics, but it is.

Then I moved on to the Z-6™ Ultra Clean Gloss Enhancer Spray, you spray it on and wipe off straight away with a soft cloth. It adds protection and makes the paint surface even more reflective. It’s also very quick to use.

Finally I went back to any fine scratches the Z5 didn’t cover and used Meguiars stage 1 on them. Combining these two products seems to be the best of both worlds.

Overall I’m really please and would recommend Zaino with a few caveats. It’s so easy to use and gives a highly reflective surface; it also stays clean longer than anything I’ve used and after a round trip of 100 miles the car looked like it had just be cleaned, apart from the insect grave yard on the front bumper of course. When I came to wash the bump again all the debris came off quickly and with very little work required, this really is Zaino trump card for me. The car stays clean longer and is so easy to wash. Also it’s quick and simple to use, the whole job from start to finish only took just over a hour, last time I used Meguiars 3 stage system I spent nearly 4 hours arsing about and I was knacked when I’d finished.

The only downside is the Z5 doesn’t do a good job of masking swirls and scratches or any paint defects, you’ll need something else for this. Zaino leaves paint with a high gloss shine, if it’s good condition, but if not, Zaino will only draw attention to any defects in the paint, on a new car I can’t image anything would make your car look better and be as simple to use. Older paints and finishes will require something different.

Nice biggrin

IIRC the reason to never use fairy liquid is because it has microscopic abrasive particles in it. Great for plates, not so good for your paintwork.

The wheels are the 18-inch SportTechno wheel, think I prefer the 18-inch Carrera wheel though
