Cerb Rear Diff
Discussion
Hi all
I have had my Cerb for a month or two now and love every bit of it. I had it up on the ramps at the weekend and noticed the rear diff has leaked some oil. It is all over the housing and a bit on the exhuast.
I am a little worried as now and again when engaging first gear and applying small amounts of power, you hear, and feel a thud from the rear as it takes up the slack!!!
Should i be worried about this?
If it needs a rebuild, is there any info out there on it or is it a specialist job?
Cheers
Ben

Hmmmm, if there is a noticeable clunk then it could be the diff, but more likely to be the top mounting bush. These are notorious for perishing over a period of time and when they start to fail you get play in the diff mountings, hence the clunk. The oil is less worrying, what tends to happen is that when the oil is topped up at a service it can be overfilled slightly, this excess oil is then blown out of the diff when giving the car some beans through an opening near the top of the diff.......hence you get burnt oil appearing on the diff and on the exhaust cans and pipes. Best bet would be to check the diff for play first.......pop it up on a ramp and then get a mechanics best friend (a crow bar) and wedge it against the back of the diff and see if there is any play.
If it is the diff then do a search on here for GKN Diffs, you will find a couple of places that can refurb them (may offer a service exchange), or somewhere like TVR Power may already have one.
