I have recent experience of this as I went on the Paris Tunnel Run a few weeks ago in my Viper which has no front plate. I was stopped by the police at the Eurotunnel just before passport control. They had pulled several of us for mis-placed plates and when they got to me they were incredulous " And this one doesn`t have a front plate at all!" which kind of got me giggling.

Anyway I said it had fallen off and there was a lot of looking at my rear plate then which they said was not the right size. I did my best to be polite and in the end they said it was a matter for the DVLA and let me go after taking my name, address and dob.

Coming back the following morning at 5.30am at Calais Eurotunnel I had the grumpy customs guy who grunted loudly to me that there was a fine in France for having no front plate. I just said sorry it must of fallen off and I would get it fixed.

I went to Nurbergring last month on the ferry and had no problems either way.

Going to Le Mans on Thursday via Eurotunnel so I have stuck a little one on the front which looks crap but I can always take it off afterwards. I do not want to drill into my Viper for anyone.I have owned it for 5 years and it is my baby.

Same experience on the G'ball in 2006. US drivers who had no front plate had to craft one with cardboard and marker pens to get through. I had mine on the dash - was stopped in Germany and on return to the UK but was let off when explained the fixings had broken. Number plate on the dash allows you to remove from view for the scameras.

My mate in an Atom got told off by the French smokies at this end but produced an adhesive plate from his bag to 'put on whilst on the train', they let him continue

I drove all the way from Sant' Agata to the Midlands without a front plate.

Customs didn't bat an eyelid.

However, on the way out (with plate attached) they pulled all 7 Lambos over for a check. Go figure. rolleyes
