Strap down that Battery !

Hello Chaps,

Installing a new battery last night - I found that teh new one, despite being identical to the old one in every other way, hasn't got the plastic lugs at the bottom - meaning that the metal clamp you would normally use to hold it down - wont work.

Has anyone tried any other methods of securing a battery. Given it gets very hot under there - it needs to be something fairly heat resistant. I was thinking of some sort of strapping device that could be wrapped around the thing.

Hi Danny.

I replaced the useless clamp on my S2 with a strap and ratchet (aka Ratchet Tie-down), available from most DIY stores (Homebase, etc). It's much more secure than the original and easy to release.

For sprinting the scrutineers like to see the battery secured by a strap, even if the original clamp is still used. Make sure you use a nylon strap to withstand the battery acid - most are, but it's also possible to get canvas straps which will soon rot.

The Homebase (Eliza Tinsley brand) ratchet & straps are red or yellow nylon, about 1inch wide and rated at 227kg with a heavy ratchet (fitted at the side to avoid the battery posts). I fitted it 5 years ago - solid as a rock.

that's a nice clean engine compartment. where did you get the replacement air filter hose/filter housing and the air vent supply hoses. i've been thinking about doing mine but don't even know what to ask for.

I bought a metal clamp from Halfords, it has an L shaped long length of metal with holes in & 2 long metal bars with hooks at the end & thread for wing nuts on the other, it holds down along the top edge of the battery and then the bars go down at an angle & through the base plate, wing nuts underneath. Never moves a millimeter

They are not replacements - everything in that picture apart from the battery is cleaned-up original (As far as I know)

It's an old pic, I've since had to replace the radiator but otherwise it's just been tidied up a bit more.
