I was under the impression the genuine parts centre section was no longer available, fibreglass copies around etc..... To respray rear bumper is about £300....then allow for finding decent condition second hand part....hard to see it all coming in over a grand in the real world.

I would put a "smart" repair of the original bumper at about £250 and a proper job at less than 1K. I think you've been given the Insurance Co "bulk it up so I can let the insurance assessor beat me down" price.

Edited to add. I don't work in a bodyshop but each of my four cars appears regularly to visit one.

The cheapest way to fix this, assuming that the PU can be repaired or replaced with new, would be to paint the centre section and blend into the 2 end caps. My shop would take about 4 hours to paint plus £90 paint and materials. There would be a small labour charge to remove and refit.

The problem is the colour. 15 year old Guards Red can be a bitch to match and even with a blend there could be a visible change in the colour/shade. One can understand that someone with a pristine "never painted" 64RS would want to make sure that there was no visible repair, that could cost a lot more.....

no one, had a few estimates when a grabber truck driver decided to turn my 205 into a 106 - work was £500 less than the car's value so it got written off

rear centre section pu for rs rarer than a mans water cooled 911 wink and even porsche can't match old guards red properly - a rear 3/4 respray on mine (domsters) turned into a full respray...

you can't compare beating out an old sh1tter of a peugeot to replacing/repairing a part you can't get anymore. and no you can't fit fibreglass.

francis, you may disagree but bodywork is body work - a panel beater won't give a rats arse if it's a Yugo or Roller.

also how nice of you to complement my previously mint 205

if the part is available it's a few hundred quid job (excl materials) if the exisitng finish can be paint matched

many thanks for the replies.

what did you chaps think about the 15 hrs labour quote too?
I assumed that included time to hand make the actual moulds to recreate the centre section in unobtainium before painting wink

can't be more than an hour to disassemble another to assemble the bumper, as Nick says, matching new Guards to faded old paint is the hardest part.

rofl

are they applying each paint atom individually by hand?

sounds like he's having a few other panels blown over at that same time at your expense

whats panel beating got to do with repairing/replacing/colour matching a plastic bumper section? very sorry i didnt compliment a car i never saw. sheeeesh relax fella. besides technically it was a sh1tter when it needed repairing. im sorry for your loss. you'll have to console yourself with one of the sexiest cars ever built... anyway, im not saying £2000 isnt robbery, but if someone broke mine id want it painted blood red. their blood.

I've got a spot of rust coming under the corner of the armourguard on my bonnet where it picked up a stone chip right on the edge. The armourguard needs removing to do the repair. However, the bonnet has previously been painted up to the armourguard, resulting in a ridge in the paint which is not noticeable at present, but would be with the plastic removed. It is also the same on the top of both wings.

The quote to remove the armourguard, repair the rust, remove the paint ridges and respray the bonnet and tops of both wings was £1,600!!! Comprised of a grands labor (number of hours not specified), £400 for paint (it's metallic black ffs, not gold leaf), plus VAT. Needless to say I've not taken them up on the offer...
