I went to look at a 964 on sunday and although it looked fantastic, sounded great with the Cup pipe, etc there were a few nagging doubts;

the last five services in the service history were carried out by "my mates garage in Tottenham as thats where I get my MOT's done" stamped up, etc. Not a dealer or even a specialist in Porsches.

Now my question is - Is this a valid FSH?

I pointed out that the car needed a good service at a specialist costing £6-700 so knocked off a sizeable chunk for that...but the deal didnt go through as I had some other doubts (the guy has tried to call me several times since then).

I think I was right to walk to away.....

I get my 993TT done at my mates garage who also isn't a specialist porsche centre but they are MORE THAN capable of looking after it. Plugs, oil and brakes are all the cars need anyway.
Infact, they've diagnosed faults for me that specialists and OPC's have overlooked.

It's a difficult one. if it was a newish car it would definitely ring alarm bells. However, it's more than ten years old. A lot of these older cars get home serviced or serviced by a mate. You mentioned it was in good condition. If the history file contained receipts for oil, plugs filters etc. then there's a good chance it has been well maintained.

thanks for the replies, he didnt mention a Terry so dont know on that one....

I was just curious as to what everyone considers as a FSH definition, i.e. OPC or specialist servicing versus "normal garage"....
I service my own car due to the high mileage on it now so I can understand about servicing your own old car against getting it done at a garage.

Anyway there a few other issues - unexplained gap in MOT's, full respray for vandal damage all the docs show it had repairs to both front wings, bonnet, front bumper (more like a front end shunt)....

One of the dangers of using non specialist Porsche service people is that whilst they are more than capable of doing the routine oil, pads, bulbs etc it`s not those things which sets good cars and bad cars apart. It`s the areas which might get changed as a precaution because the specialist knows they are prone to failure or other components where a non specialist might not think to look. There is also the danger of them thinking "they`re all a bit like that" when in fact in that instance there was a problem.

Ultimately the car it`s self will provide you with the clues as to how it`s been maintained.
