Well obviously we were heard

Mark Sharman
Director of ITV News and Sport

We're very sorry and we'll never going to do it again
we'll not really - but here's what he had to say for himself
But some progress

Not wishing to defend them in any way, but the best way to learn something and move on in a positive way is to make a mistake, its just a shame that this mistake had to come on eone of the most anticipated press conferences of the season.

I would like to criticise what was said a little bit though too, they said that due to the safety cars the race over ran, the F1 rules stipulate that a race will be 300 km or 2 hours in length, so in reality the coverage should always allow for the eventuality that the race can last the maximum 2 hours, then followed by the podium and then press conference.

At least they'll switch to ITV4 in the future if it over-runs. That's a start.

Interesting how he's clearly had a few comments about superior BBC coverage, and mentions it towards the end, but there's nothing about Stopping the Cock!

Good point. Overall though I thought it was a pretty fair response.

The BBC coverage was pretty dire though, as far as i remember, and to be fair, ITV have pumped money into making improvements to the show, far from perfect, but better than BBC.

I've mailed them to ask why the highlights show didn't contain the press conference. Hopefully they'll be inteligent enough to broadcast it in the build-up to Indy...

I think his memories of BBC F1 coverage are sketchier than the memory of those he is referring to.

As I've said many times already, from 1992 onwards, BBC showed ALL the GPs live and covered most of the Saturday qualifying sessions live too.

You have to remember that throughout ALL of the era of BBC's coverage, qualifying included both Friday AND Saturday times so Saturday could often be a total dead loss as an event if track conditions were worse than on Friday. I attended the 1995 San Marino GP and that is exactly what happened. Pole position had been set on Friday and everyone knew that Saturday would not result in faster times - so nobody really tried.

In the current era, I have no doubt that BBC would cover qualifying too.

So it is grossly unfair to call the BBC's coverage "dire". It evolved over time growing more and more extensive as the years progressed. When ITV picked up the ball in 1997, they more or less continued where BBC had left off. If anything, I would accuse ITV of WASTEFUL use of the resources they allocate to their F1 coverage.

The highlights show was particularly disappointing. They only showed three driver interviews. Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso (congratulating Lewis) and another (congratulation Lewis). We heard nothing of Alonso's porblems, nothing from Heidfeld, Wurz or Sato. No mention of Davidson's beaver trouble or Kimi's problems either. I for one shall not be wasting my time tuning into the highlights show again.

If there had been a football match on you can say for certain that the soaps would have had to wait for that to finish if it had gone into extra time and penalty's so to be honest i think we were robbed!!!!!!

On the other hand at least the channel has made a move in the right direction?
but my only feeling is now [as the BBC used to do] it will be just another excuse to swap channels if some other sport is about to go live lets hope that will not be the case in the future.

From that ITV BOD ...The main complaint about Sunday was the fact that we missed the press conference and/or any interviews with Lewis Hamilton after his ground-breaking win. This wasn’t ideal, but ITV is a general entertainment channel and we have to satisfy different sections of the audience...

boocks, total boocks - as the poster above has said, if this was football, everything would have to wait including Corrie, and in fact when they show football during the weeks they cancel move everything to make way for the over-paid poofs!!!

Football has no adverts in the actual game, the build-up, half-time and end are filled with adverts. So why does F1 have to have adverts during the race. There is no reason apart from money!

Come on Bernie, bring back your digital service and you'll be more successful now becuase we have had enough of ITV screwing up what we love.

PS. Interesting to see no mention about everyone's views on the cock?

PPS. Why did they not show the press conference in the highlights show as they had promised?

PPPS. Why has it taken so long to respond?

PPPPS. Why no mention that now LH has won a race that he's instructed all personnel in the ITV F1 team to remove their noses from LH ass now and to cover the whole F1 event and not just our great new find from the UK!!!

But it ISN'T football. I LIKE football, I DON'T like F1GP. It's boring. That's why football is treated more favourably.

I think that the response from Mark at ITV is very fair. It's not the F1 channel, you know, it's ITV. Yes, some people love F1 so much that they would spend hours watching the racers getting kitted up, monitoring the weather conditions etc, and I suspect that many people think that would make them very dull indeed. I think that the coverage of F1 is already more than appropriate and that the complainers would not be happy with anything.

I can't stand soaps, but to those who like them, they had to wait for the end of the race (that over-run anyway). A poxy press conference? Some people will just complain about ANYTHING!

For the very few who give a s**t, see below:

Rich - I think most people understand why the press conference wasn't shown in the live broadcast. However, what they CAN'T understand is why it wasn't shown, AS PROMISED BY ITV, in their highlights programme. The ITV explanation STILL hasn't explained why this situation came about.

My suspicion is that ITV do not have the rights to show the press conference outside of the live coverage. Perhaps they are unwilling to admit this.

All most fans want is a bit of openness and honesty from ITV - not the feeling that they are being constantly palmed off.

ITV is a general entertainment channel and we have to satisfy different sections of the audience.

Those are the words of ITV's Director for News and Sport, a Mr Mark Sharman.

Ok, so if ITV is an entertainment channel, why the FECK did you bid for the rights for one of the worlds largest TV watched sporting events?

Once again, this weekend we see that live qualifying will be put on IT4 instead of ITV1 - why? Well they are showing You've Been Framed and Scooby-Doo!!!! Are you taking the FECKING PISS Mr Sharman. How can you hold your head up high and say that you are satisfying your audience. Two repeats, not even worth a prime-time slot in my opinion instead of allowing the UK watch one of the best hopes this country has had in recent years attacking one of the greatest tracks in terms of motor sport heritage....

Where is the justice in that.

Are you telling us Mr Sharman that You've Been Framed and Scooby Bloody Doo couldn't be moved to ITV4 instead?

If your channel is about accomadating the interests of different sections of the audience, then I would expect that Fans of F1 are a huge section, and if you claim 8 million watched LH last week, then I bet that's more than most of the drivel you put on your channel.

So show us you really support F1 and make room for coverage on ITV1 live everytime.

Corrie didn't start late either!

The wife walked into our lounge @ 7:50pm anticipating Corrie starting at 8pm.

Quote "negotiated a lengthly delay to the start of Corrie" My ARSE it was all of 2 mins at the max!

Even the wife said what a disgrace it was not having the post race interviews etc & she hates Motorsport

Has to be said that the BBC are way ahead on their interactive and digital offerings compared to ITV. So if it did come back to the beeb, then I'd expect we'd have all that digital could offer

Of course that won't happen - if anyone picks it up, it will be SKY

Bernie has categorically stated that he does not want to do exclusive deals with subscription satellite broadcasters such as Sky. The wealth of F1 is absolutely dependent on the sponsors getting exposure to as big a TV audience as possible. Once a sport goes over completely to a form of "pay TV" its TV audiences drop off significantly.

Sky are always very reluctant to reveal their true audience figures and, at the moment, are not compelled to do so by Ofcom (the TV regulator).

heres an idea, why dont they put all f1 coverage on itv4, then if it over runs or any other problems it wont interfere with any "prime time" shows and they could also show less or hopefully no adverts. itv4 is available on freeview or sky channels so we could still watch it but being a "less popular channel" we could get a much longer coverage with no ads and no cutting it short for corrie for all us f1 fans. lets face it they do that for footy!!
