Hi all, what gearbox is used in a 4.2? is it the same as a cosworth?
Also is there a better box that fits? would like a six speed for better mpg on long runs!

It's a T5 gearbox. I averaged about 28mpg on 2000m blast round france last year - I dont think that is too bad for a 4.5 litre car !

28 MPG! Wow, getting about 22mpg and 15 round town!
Also dont the 4.5 have a different final drive? TVR Edds is doing just over 2500 rpm at 80mph but mine is at 3k! so a 4.5 should be slightly better on a run!

smile Cerbs make you see things through Rose tinted specs don;t they. Anyway you got me thinking, so I checked my old thread from after I came back from my 2k miles blast through france -
..........Quote "So in summary - Nothing went wrong, absolutely nothing, I used 1/2 litre of oil, 74 gallons of petrol, averaged 20.3 mpg, never got any aches or pains from driving the car up to 10 hrs a day, and I enjoyed every minute"

So do 4.2's and 4.5's have the same box but different diffs?

As far as I know yes....

4.5's have the Hydratrack diff (which was an option on the 4.2), but other than that they are identical.

There was an option at some point on the Cerb's production run of a close ration gearbox, but I think it made 1st longer & all the other ratio's closer, but 5th was still the same.

My 4.2 has the Hydratrack diff but seems to be lower geared that TVR Edd's 4.5.??

TVR Edds is listed in a his profile as a Red Rose, which may have the close ration gearbox, but I was sure thta didn't alter 5th.

All the Cerb's I've ever been out in (8 of them), have been about 3000rpm at 80 (as yours is)... ??? confused

I'd ask if the sequential box has straight cut gears, and if so how noisy it will be. I couldn't live with the straight cut 5th gear in my race 'boxes in a road car, though naturally it doesn't bother me in the race car!
