Aim for here.. http://www.glenmoristonarms.co.uk/ on the banks of Loch Ness, nice hotel and then you're all set for the blast
from here out to Eilen Donan http://www.eileandonancastle.com/
and Plockton http://www.plockton.com/
A fantastic road!
You'll have came up past Loch Lomond
and thru' Glencoe to get there, a great drive.

Head straight up to Penrith (take care around Shap M6 mobile cameras), then take the A686 to Alston. This is a fantastic road up over Hartside top and down into Alson (less than 30 mins from M6). Stay at Lovelady Shield www.lovelady.co.uk
You will have driven one of the best roads inthe North, getting to a wonderful hotel in the countryside. Next morning carry on up towards Hexham and back onto M6 if you want direct route to Scotland or take the borders route A68 towards Edinburgh if you want great empty A roads over Cheviots. In Scotland there are great roads everywhere if you look them up. If weather is iffy on West Coast head up towards Braemar.

This topic comes up from time to time. The following is an excellent thread on the subject.

Do make the effort to get to Scotland. The roads are great and the scenery even better. It's what a Porsche was made for.

Forget Kendal and stay here http://www.lakesidehotel.co.uk/ lovely hotel in great countryside.
Then drive up the west of Windermere and then cutting across to the A592 over Kirkstone Pass and join the mway at Junction 40 at Penrith.
Can be busy but set of early and you will miss all the day trippers.
Went up there last weekend and it was empty at 9am when we got there.

Or................. M6 then M8 to Glasgow then go over the Erskine Bridge and head for Loch Lomand where there is a Beautiful Hotel & Spa(for wife) called Cameron House - http://www.devere.co.uk/deluxe/Cameron-House/?EQID...
All roads surrounding the Loch are fantastic sweeping wide roads with the best views you will ever see and as far as i can remember from my Lotus days, no speed cameras. Can easily be done as a one night stop.

if it has to be scotland and you have time the roads around Loch Torridon are awesome and the Loch Torridon Hotel is great with a whiskey bar to die for
that said its a hell of a long way from Brighton with the drag from Brighton to end of the M1/A1 and back pretty tedious before you really get going and having just taken the girlfriend on a 2500 mile driving trip across europe if I had a week and wanted to test the steed I'd do the Chunnel/across Belgium/Holland into Germany and spend more time with autobahn and the mountains of austria/switz/italy - the roads are outstanding and there are some great hotels
email me on hotels if interested

Good point actually..... I know some of the best driving
roads are in NW Scotland but if you can get to
Germany/ Nurburgring in the same time then go for it.
I was planning for Nurburgring this year but due to
impending father hood I've been told to "screw the nut"
In saying that the NW Scotland is a blast....and my
wife says that your partner would love the NW tour.
( Go for Nurburgring !!!!!)

Was only talking to my wife just the other week about a trip up to scotland in the motor and trying to avoiding the school holiday. May see you along the way but have no firm dates yet.If you've got a week and want ideas for places to stop off en-route to Scotland, the Peak District National Park is fantastic.
The scenery is awesome - not on quite the same level as Sctoland, but certainly on a par with the Lake District.
There are loads of fast, twisty roads with great pubs, hotels and restaurants dotted around.
I'm not sure where you're coming from, but the Peaks are mainly in Derbyshire which is very accessible from the M1 (from the South leave at J26 Nottingham and head towards Matlock).
You don't need a route or a even a map when you get here - just head off anywhere along the A6 between Bakewell and Buxton on the B roads and you will have an absolute blast.
As for accommodation, the Peakcock Inn at Rowsley near Bakewell is where all the movie stars stay when they film in the Peak District. Depending on your budget, Hassop Hall near Bakewell and the Cavendish Hotel (part of the Chatsworth estate) are excellent.
The Barrell Inn at Bretton (near Eyam) serves good grub and has one of the best views of any pub in Britain and on a sunny weekend it's a mecca for petrol heads from all over the East Midlands.
From Buxton it's a short run to Stockport and you can head up the motorway towards Penrith and the Lakes - a couple of hours away.
The area around Buxton and Chapel-en-le-Frith has some of the best driving routes (and scenery) in the UK.
Stockport is handy for Manchester and I think the motorway passes by the Trafford Centre, so you could even stop off for a bit of shopping is you've got the missus in tow (give me a second while I don my flame proof trousers).
Wherever you end up, have fun!

I'll second all of these - just spent 10 days based not far from Eileen Donan castle. Don't forget the road to Applecross, the brilliantly names Pass Of The Cattle - one of the best roads anywhere!
