First post so here goes.....I know there are lots of topics on this but i just got lost reading them all.
I need a cheap satnav (circa £150) that does decent maps, road positioning scameras i.e, preferably not the ones that beep when you're in the area even if it's not on the same road as you. If there isn't one that can do this, whats the best otherwise and cheapest places to buy them? All help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Garmin C510 £150 Halfords.
Doesn't beep for cameras on different roads or cameras on the other side of the road, but will beep constantly in areas of mobile enforcement.
Doesn't fall off the windscreen like the Tomtom, and doesn't develop the myriad of faults that the Tomtom does.

Might be worth looking at the specs of some of of the upmarket models to see what your potential purchase doesn't include. For instance not having street maps of every town in Europe might be bearable but lack of scamera locations might be important if you have points. If you can get one which does full postcodes rather than just the first few characters it is a strong plus point. coffee

Oh, and first time out it takes a while for the unit to realise it isn't still in the Far East. Can take half-an-hour or so for this to sink in.

LG LN505 - exclusive to Halfords apparently - £159, easy to use, 3 Hr battery, EU mapping, full postcode searching, ext antenna facility.

Great value - bought mine today and I think it's great smile .

PS - no scamera facility, but I have separate Inforad GPS camera locator..

P,
A quick search on here shows that they seem to be quite prone.
Garmin also comes with a case, though the TT is more portable due to it's slender size.

hi guys
Just bought a mio c220 sat nav from Servu Yeovil 01935423888 and it only cost me £125! The european one is only £150. Just given them a call and they told me they deliver to anywhere in the UK, might be worth you guys giving them a bell.

Navman F20 for £94.99 plus VAT in Costco, not used this particular model but must represent pretty good value for money.

You get what you pay for - any system under £150 is going to be pretty poor to be honest. I wouldn't even bother with Navmans, you won't regret spending the extra on a Tom Tom or Garmin

Some might say they're all useless if the map is out of date- I suppose it depends how often cities change their one way systems :-)

A Garmin tip: If you buy a Garmin and the map is out of date, you can get one free update. From Garmin Tech Support:
"... However it would be impossible to track the purchase date of every unit that leaves a shop, so we go by registration date. If you register after the release of revised mapping you will be able to get that mapping for free."

I got my free map update 14 months after purchase ;-) by waiting for the update to be released and then registering the Serial# online. It came with PC software (on DVD) to manage favourites and link with Google Earth so you can normally pinpoint your holiday spot long before you set off.

Maybe this will influence your choice.

Obviously you get what you pay for.

I'd say Garmin Nuvi 200 is currently the best unit out at that price.

Tomtom are awesome units, no doubt. They tend to be more of a name price though. They charge a lot for really not a lot, just the name tomtom.
Navman suck compared to the other two, as do LG. They are both much slower, to find addresses, pick up a signal and their more difficult to use (compared to TT & Garmin)

Have had a look at the systems in this price bracket today. Very informative/helpful assistant at Halfrauds said that because of superb branding/marketing people often come into the shop asking for a "TomTom" instead of a SatNav - rather like asking for a "Hoover", but that nearly all of the units they had returned with faults were TomToms.scratchchin

Also noticed that the Garmin NUVI 250 (incl Ireland & Europe) is the same price at www.halfords.com as the 200 is in the shop. He was not aware of that ... so a new 250 online is what I am going for!
