Apple shop has:

Aperture $449
Photoshop Extended $605
CS3 Web Premium (incl Dreamweaver and PS ext) $865

I want it to fiddle around with my Nikon RAWs to (most probably) .jpeg out put to be user friendly and send to friends/upload etc.

How do i decide between this lot? Its doing my head in! rolleyes

They're two totally different pieces of software. Aperture (and Lightroom) sits in front of Photoshop, and is not designed to replace it.

You import your files with Aperture; store them, alter the exposure, add a little colour and contrast, perhaps remove some small blemishes, THEN you sen the file (usually a 16 bit TIFF) off to Photoshop to do more dramatic alterations.

If I could only have one piece of software then I would choose Aperture, but in the real world you need both smile

aperture can do 10% what photoshop can do.
photoshop can do 90% what aperture can do.

photoshop extended comes with adobe bridge which is an image categorizing/browsing type program.

Aperture can do 10% what photoshop can do, but 90% faster than Photoshop.
Photoshop can do 90% what aperture can do, but at only 10% of the speed.

Fair? winksmile

Fair..? No! wink 'cos I still can't decide...

I assume that with CS3 extended i wouldn't need to buy Aperture? So why do i keep coming back to thinking that i should have it?

How about trying them? I think you can download a free trial for both of them and once you've actually used them you'll appreciate how different they are. Aperture is actually more similar to Adobe Lightroom than Photoshop.

Andy - I've only used aperture and CS3 on different machines, so can't comment on speeds really. CS3 starts and runs faster than CS2 on my xp machine though.

Buffalo - i think it boils down to how much image tweakery you plan on doing. Depending on how pc savvy you are, you'll master aperture in a matter of hours, whereas mastering photoshop takes far far longer.

Have you considered photoshop elements? Its a pretty powerful cutdown version and is around a tenth of the cost.

To be honest, at this stage all i want to do is get the photo from RAW to something that is a bit more sensible in day to day file sizes etc, and i suppose just remove the odd blemish, here and there. I'm not at this stage into big fiddling when it comes to photography as i have only recently changed from film i still do most of the work at the camera.

I think i might start with Aperture and see how far i get into it. The indecision comes i think, from reading that so many people seem to use CS3 for their shots - it's hard not to think that I'm missing out for not having the program - although i honestly don't know how much i will use it at this stage.

:scratchchin :Hmm gotta be careful - that's halfway to a plan! rolleyeshehe

Buffalo: If there is an Apple shop in WA go and sit in on a tutorial for Aperture. If not the next best thing is an online tutorial which you will find if you have a mooch around apple.com
FWIW I use Aperture a great deal and PS Elements occasionaly as Aperture fulfills most of my needs. HTH.
