TPFT vs Fully comp & helmet leather cover?
Discussion
Just wondering how many of you have third party fire and theft insurance and how many have fully comp insurance, and whats your bike worth?
I about to renew my policy and the thought occured that maybe my P&J has dropped in value to the point where TPFT is the best option. I'm on a 2000 yr Honda Hornet worth about £1400 tops. TPFT I can get for £120 and Fuly comp is £240 inc leather and helmet cover. Question is if I do claim on a bike of this value I forsee several years of getting shafted for not much initial return (£250 excess).
The helmet and leather cover is kind of swinging me towards the fully comp but are these policies worth the paper they're printed on, or is an insulting 'market value' offer made for damaged helmets etc?

My bike is worth about £1500 and I have TPF&T cover. My thinking was based primarily around the fact that I also have two other car policies and I am a named driver on my wifes car policy. Any claim I made for the bike would have to justify the ‘dent’ in no-claims/increase in policy loading on all three other policies as well as the impact on the bike policy. The added cost of the other policies plus the increase in the bike policy that resulted from any claim would likely be more than the value of the claim. (Remembering that I am only talking about claims I could make on a fully comp. policy that I couldn’t make on a TPF&T policy).

I thought, in fact was pretty sure, no claims for car and bike if on seperate policies were not linked. Sure you would have to own up to a crash but one vehicle wouldn't affect the other??
You have to declare claims on the other policies which risks getting a policy loading even though it may not directly impact your no-claims bonus. The net result is that you end up paying more for the other policies. I know this as some years ago I had a bike stolen which I claimed for. The result was a loading on my car policy as I was then ‘an increased risk’.I've got TPFT and recently had a accident that involved an uninsured car driver. I'll never go TPFT again. The car driver was 100% at fault, had an unroadworthy car and had been drinking.
My insurance company told me that they had no interest in the claim as my legal cover would be used to claim against the car driver. So far (after 3.5 months) all I hear is "we've sent the car driver several letters and he has yet to respond". How does that help me when nobody will decide if my bike is a write off or not???
At least with fully comp, my insurance company would have paid up and tried to recover from the other driver. This way I wouldn't have been taking buses & tubes for more than 3 months with no end in sight.
This was my first insurance claim ever. Fully comp next time, all the time.

Even on my '92 TDM worth about £1k I'm fully comp. It only makes about £50 difference between TPFT but gets me back on the road if I bin it all on my own and covers the gear too, so it's well worth the extra few quid, especially riding in London everday.
Also, I think they would only cover me for business use if I was comp.

'Fraid not, I recently renewed my bike insurance and declared an accident that my wife had in a car insured in my name and they put my premium up by £20 for it, best was the crash wasn't even her fault but the other party was not traceable. And I've also been stung on my other car for £40 - £50 over the same incident, it didn't used to matter as long as it was not a loss on the actual policy but I fear some of Nu-labias culture of greed is rubbing off on the insurance companies.....

I don't have an answer for you, but here's my circumstances - put them into the brew and see what you think.
Bike cost £7.5K five years ago. Std value now £2.5K.
£4K carbon fibre body kit. Value now £50.
Lid - £859 (no joke) - value now = "see you in court". Gloves = £230 new etc etc.
If yo're not going to have an accident, the answer is easy!

2003 ST1300 cost £5K 6 months ago: insurance <£300 for 5000 miles fully-comp. No NCD as I'd been off for years. No cover for kit AFAIK though. I'd see if you can get a better deal, sounds like they might be using the feature as a sweetener (but you can bet you'll be paying for it...).
